Geta Denarius!!

Picked this little gem up earlier this summer from Ken Dorney.
I always wanted a coin of Geta, don't ask me why!
When I first read about Geta and his murder by his brother I naturally assumed that he was a noble young man who was killed by his big bad brother. Well the truth is he was just as bad as Caracalla, though he was loved by the legionaries more than Caracalla was. I've heard that if Caracalla hadn't killed Geta then Geta would have killed him eventually. Whether Geta would have purged his dead brother's associates is pure speculation though.

The reverse ends legend with "AUG V". The 'V' stands for the number of times donatives had been given at the time of the minting. "Liberalitas" signifies generosity.

And as per poster's request...how about Philip II as Caesar? Being a junior Caesar got him murdered at age 11. It was a tough time to be a member of any imperial family.

Nice coin Magnus Maximus and good choice of thread to start, I especially like his haircuts as he progressed from junior to adulthood, it seems he had a new profile every 6 months. Keeping die engravers busy. Also like to add this would be a good collecting theme for somebody just starting out, as not that expensive and very interesting. I have one but not photographed yet, post later on.

 

Super coin! Geta was definitely a cute kid. I have two teenage sons and I've done everything I can to keep them from killing each other. So far so good, wish me luck.

 

At the moment I have one bronze of Geta's, from Pautalia, with a nice, boyish bust and a great little snake...

 

I see no reason to say Geta was as bad as Caracalla. Perhaps toward the end, Septimius may have done something that appeared to favor him. Caracalla would not have taken that well.
A few two portrait coins of Marcianopolis survived Caracalla's purge of Geta portraits.


Perhaps he was a better looking kid, more favored by the soldiers and dangerous to Caracalla's gameplan.
