Should the mint use the 1964 Morgan and Peace dollar hubs and dies?

That's allright - buy them from Coin Vault - they are still trying to peddle the Mercs as well as all the TV & internet coin shops.

These would not become fodder. They would be an epic issue that would sell high on the aftermarket and stay there. Guaranteed!

Immaterial to me. Anything they did along these lines would be forever out of my budget; the aftermarket would see to that.

Keep in mind, we haven't even managed to pass an actual Federal budget in 19 years. Don't hold your breath on getting anything from Congress.

As being the only branch of government that actually makes a profit, the mint basically does what the mint wants to do. They would have no problem getting this through congress. The actual idea of striking 1964 dated dollars today sounds pretty silly to me though. What's the point; wouldn't it be the same if they struck a peace or Morgan dated 2016?

    I want a Morgan from my birth year, 1959, that's what I want. :)

I think they should strike the dollars, but have something signifying that they were made in what ever year they are made in. They would have a huge success selling sets of a Morgan, Peace, and Kennedy half dollar dated 1964-201in silver. They should make copies of the hubs, then donate the masters to the Ana to display.

I probably wouldn't be interested in the coins either. Hopefully they wouldn't put a CC mint mark (or other mint that wasn't active in 1964) on them.

Actually Congress is pretty good about passing bills that bring in money without raising taxes as long as they are not too controversial in other ways. Selling radio spectrum and making coins for collectors are a couple of examples. Once the smell of easy (i.e. little political cost) money wafts into the nostrils of congressmen, bill submissions aren't far behind. It's just a matter of the idea occurring to their staffs and them being convinced that the political cost is indeed small. And it there is perceived political gain, bill submission is inevitable.

Dan,why should the mint contract with you when they can just buy up a bunch of Peace dollars and strike them themselves? They have all the equipment.

And no they shouldn't use them.

Seems like the more bizzaro the mint gets the more collectors love it. So lets strike 'em at Westpoint.

Because I have experience in over-striking Morgan and Peace Dollars ;)
Anyway, I doubt that they would ever do such a thing. The only reason for them to strike over existing coins would be if they really wanted to make some "1964"-dated dollars, but didn't have the Congressional approval to issue new coins.
