I was going through my Camera roll on my phone, and i found this picture that I took at an antique store... The obverse of the coin is known about, but the reverse of the coin is unknown at least to me... Thoughts?
I don't like it. Could be a cast, though it's a little difficult to say based on it being on a 2x2 holder and the cell phone quality, but there is something about it I just don't like.
To mangle a phrase, "Reference is futile" Whatever it is, it's not an ancient coin of Nero. What is that reverse, some type of fanciful galley?
Everyone that I have talked to has said that they have seen the obverse of the coin, but not the reverse... could it have been that they just changed the back somehow by removing the design, and carving a different one on it?
The obverse looks like a "real" Nero in a general sense-- the portrait is passable, the obverse legend might be one that was used (can't make out the last few characters). But it looks cast and it probably just some modern fantasy piece.
Could be a cast of a modern fake (ie. a fake of a fake) or it could be a struck piece using modern fake dies. Who knows. Either way, it's still fake.
I'm green with envy. That is the one bronze coin that could get me to break away from my obsession with ancient and medieval silver coins. It's just so pretty. Is it yours? If it is, congrats!
No, it's not mine, just an example to illustrate what they look like. I am not really interested in early Imperial, only Late Roman bronze.
I doubt this & it's hard to tell from the OP pic, could be an overstruck reverse. Or maybe I was staring at it to hard. It doesn't look the same as the port of Ostia. The OP appears as 1 ship with 3 masts.
