I purchased these coins 15+ years ago on ebay, the Domitian and Septimus Severus denarii and Philip antonianus were purchased from 2 different sellers in England, the bronzes from a collector in the US, all through Ebay. The level of knowledge in this forum is superior to mine, I am thankful for any opinion. So if you feel any are fake, PLEASE tell me, I'd appreciate it.
Welcome to CT. Have you purchased other coins in the last 15 years? 15 years ago I had plenty of coins in my collection but nothing ancient except a widow's mite that was given to me when I was a kid.
A small confession, I sold some ancients on Ebay about 14 or 15 years ago. I ended up acquiring denarii and double denarii of several Emperors (Vespasian, Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius, Alexander Severus, Gordian III, and Philip I) as part of a trade. At that time I didn't care at all for ancients...I made the trade because there were also a few US coins I wanted thrown in with the trade (the guy wanted to trade all, and not just his US coins), and I figured I could sell that "ancient junk" for a profit on the Ebay. So I promptly placed the ancient coins on Ebay and sold them off. Looking back on it, I wish I hadn't, but hindsight is 20/20. I don't consider those coins to be my "first ancients" as I really did not care at all for them and sold them off immediately for what I thought was a decent profit at the time. And those US coins I cared for so badly and traded for as part of that deal have long been sold, and the coins I gave the other party as part of the exchange I wish i still had (a few foreign gold coins). Feel free to revoke my "ancient collector" card for admitting to that blasphemy. Obviously I no longer see ancient coins as "ancient junk."
Still missing a Marcus Aurelius. However, I would not compare those coins to the collection I have today. I have far surpassed anything I had back then.
Thank you for all the replies, I was nervous about my Domitian denarius, I'm glad they passed this informal test. They are all common issues, so I figured that limited the possibility somebody would fake them. My only criteria was size, weight, style in the Sears catalog, looking for a seam or casting bubbles, and striking the old silver with another piece of metal to see if it would ring. I never bought ancient coins after my initial purchases. Just a small piece of the Brahin Pallasite (meteorite). The last coins I've bought online are bitcoin and namecoin.
