It may be an improper use of terminology, but because both NGC and PCGS put it on their slabs, it's here to stay. Curiously, on GSA holders that NGC certifies, they just put VAM-3 on the label. The only cap is on Ms. Liberty. Cal
There are a lot of "confusing" things in numismatics. Many came about before you were around. The important thing to keep in mind is (except on rare occasion IF YOU ARE LUCKY) no one cares about your confusion. See your next quote as it saved me using it as an example. Yes we do, and with your book, and posts you can help educate collectors and perhaps even change things. BTW, it took me about ten years after becoming a professional numismatist to discover through reading that there was no such thing as a "Double Die." That's what most of my associates called these coins. My comments above are also directed to you.
I saw a dealer at a show this weekend and he showed me two (EDS and LDS) WL 50c dated in the 1940's (forgot to remember the date) that had a die break from the eagles mouth and back across his head into the field. He was calling it the "Drooling Eagle" variety. I wish I had thought to take a photo!
