Yes and no. Long time authenticators have seen the quality of fakes improve over the decades. Thus, very often we can to pin-point the general time a gold C/F was struck by determining the specific type of defects on it. For example, the "wormy tool mark" era lasted until the mid-1970's. Silver C/F are harder to determine. Specific C/F can be dated by the release of C/F alerts for each of them. AFAIK, no one cares about the crude Chinese fakes - only the deceptive ones that get past the TPGS for a short time. If it were not for the efforts of Jim Young and his group plus a few other collectors, many of the very deceptive Chinese fakes might still be going undetected!
I guess you could say I am torn: the amount of detail from TTTT over in the CU forums, and the public confirmation of him as a confidant of JB gives his tale SOME credibility. OTOH....just can't see organized crime wanting to get into something as convulted, difficult, and involving as many moving parts as producing counterfeits of a rare coin that would only be able to be passed to people who knew of the coin but not too much so that they'd recognize it as a fake.
It was a flawed business model. You can pass counterfeit $20's anywhere in the world, but the potential market for these was small, and that market tended to be people who had been collecting for a while.
Apparently, there was some guy on a YT channel a few years ago who was going to do a story on the Omega Counterfeits but he either was lying or started to do the research and realized the story was a dead-end.
His you tube show is over on Collectors Universe. I watched it today. There is a discussion about the Omega fakes. I'm banned from the PCGS site so please say hello to everyone for me from Insider if you check it out.
Why are all the SMARTEST and BEST people banned from all the coin sites ?? How is a dunce like me supposed to LEARN if all the Einstein's of the Coin World are MIA ??
I broke the rules when ignorant people were posting about COVID over there. Although what I posted turned out to be correct, the young lady running the forum did not like my remarks and banned me. In there defense, they did give me a long rope and a warning.
That was the 14th time, though.....I remember stuff. OK, OK, the 11th time. (Don't hit me. I remember the old days)
