Boy now go walk out the door...so I found this in my bag searches today. I have never seen a cracked die except on google and only read the definition so since y'all always help is this one? As you can see it is raised, especially on the "Q" in quarter. It was found in a North Dakota 50 State Quarter Sealed (well not anymore ) Mint sack. Thanks!
This one forces the question, "I wonder how long the obverse die lasted after striking it?" That is a serious crack by anyone's definition, and it is not all shown in these images. I suspect it travels further along the neck than is shown here, and if the disparity in breadth is too awful great along its' length, one must also question what the actual condition of the die was at the moment of strike. Keep in mind, these are hardened steel dies, and there are very few ways to create a channel wide enough for such a crack.... So, just how_far does that crack go?
Great coin and crack! Most stay just on the neck, yours is a very nice one. Good find. It carries a slight premium, but if it were mine, I wouldn't sell it. Definitely a keeper Mine for reference to show you how dramatic yours is:
The base of Washington's neck is one of the more common locations for a crack to begin, and yours is a nice specimen of how a crack can progress toward the rim. If you have any bags of 1999-P Georgia quarters, you might find some nice cracks extending in both directions from the neck. Chris
Important point there - the individual stresses of the strike differ greatly according to the design of the die. Areas of large pressure differential occur in all cases, and each issue has "characteristic" areas prone to die cracking. The Kennedy Half is another example where these stresses frequently cause cracking in that same place; other issues crack elsewhere.
Yes! For example, the base of the Lincoln Memorial is a common place where cracks extend toward the rim. Unfortunately, it is a very short distance. Chris

Being from the DC area, I've done it many times, ice skated on the reflection pond and even got chased out of the Johnson inaugural parade by Secret Service agents. Now, I can't tell you what I did in Philly as a kid because I don't know if there is a statute of limitations. Chris
