I recently found a 1955... working on a 1953-1995 Copper Elizabeth Canadian Cent set and only now need the 1954 to finish it.
Nice! Ya 54s a tough one, low mintage relative to the other Elizabeth cents. I've still yet to find a 2012, I feel like lots of them have been hoarded because of their significance as the last canadian cent
Yes, that '54 is tough... kind of like the 54 Philly wheatie for West coasters like me. I did find a 2012 a couple of weeks ago, actually. I'm complete from 1955-1989... Missing 1990, 1993, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 & 2011.
No 54 Philly wheatie yet...actually EVER in circulation/CRH. Just the 54-D and 54-S. Every 54 Philly cent I own, I have bought.
Nice! I got 10 rolls of cents from the bank couple days ago and found a 53s and 41s. I was shocked because I rarely ever find S wheats in MA. I'll take what I can get for sure, but I'm not counting on my good fortune to continue long
Well, I finally found my first EVER 1954 Philadelphia minted wheat cent... also found a 51 Philly to get me down to only needing 10 coins to complete my 1934-1958 Short Set of Wheaties out of my current run of CRH. I'm now missing: 35D, 35S, 36D, 37D, 38D, 39, 39D, 40D, 43D and 48S. My money is on finding the 39 and/or 48S next... .
Yes, I am... I have a Green Littleton Lincoln 1930-1958 book. Page 3 is done, page 2 has 2 holes, and page 1 has lots of holes. I'm not even going to bother with the 1931 to 1933 dated coins as I've NEVER found one in circulation for any of those three years. I'm also doing a Jefferson 1938-1961 folder... I'm down to just two coins now. The 1943-D and the 1950-D. My avatar is of the 1939-D and 1938-S I found in consecutive rolls about a month ago when I hit that LOOMIS bonanza.
Nice, keep us updated. I've never found a depression era coin of any denomination either, I'd love to stumble across one one day
Will do! Closest I've come to a depression era (1931-1933) "find" were the 1932 quarter and the 1931 dimes I found in my dealer's junk silver boxes. But those don't really count. LOL.
I here you. I'm from MA too and S finds are rare here for sure. So when I went to CA a couple of weeks ago on vacation, I made it a point to hit a couple of BOA's nearby and got 20 rolls of cents hoping to find some S's. (My wife thought I was crazy for CRHing on vacation). Well unfortunately 2 out of the 3 banks I went to only had new rolls fresh from mint (16-D), which was disappointing but I took them anyway since uncirculated D's are also hard to find on East Coast. Also, the rolls I got from the third bank although they were circulated they had no S's in them. Mostly D's and for years after 1974 when they stopped minting S pennies. There were a few pre-74's in there but they were all D's and P's. So I guess even out West S's are not plentiful in circulation.
I wouldve hit the banks out there as well, always worth the shot. After reading your post I decided to double check what I have... Out of the hundreds of wheats I've stacked over the years... A whopping 9 of them have the S mintmark. Any S wheat is definitely a good find regardless of year
A word of advice for next time you visit the west coast... Don't go to BofA. They are horrible out here, and more often than not only have new coins. They also hate to take rolled coins. Wells Fargo, CitiBank, and Chase out here are much better options. It's almost like the BofAs out here purposely try to get new coins to discourage CRH.
I was dead tired after an emotionally draining Dodger win in the baseball playoffs... I decided to go through my coins purchased several hours earlier at 11pm anyways... When I found the 43-D I said, "yeah, FINALLY!" It's only the 5th D mint I've found among 72 War Nickels to date. I finished up around 1am, and then hit the sack!
