Hello, I was wondering how the ANA show in Anaheim went. Good attendance? Good facilities? Wide range of dealers?
Never been to Chicago but long beach has more energy if that tells you anything. It was good for meeting up with guys you normally don't see out here in Cali though.
I went Friday. I've been to the long beach show several times and like them far better than the ANA one. Maybe ANA was a bit bigger, but after parking and the cost to get in, it cost me 26 dollars. I thought the "free" slabbed ASE with purchase of a 48 (or 49?) ANA membership sounded reasonable until they said I'd have to pay for a three year membership in order to get the coin, since i was an ANA member once (several yrs ago) and this would be considered a renewal. Needless to say, I didn't bother joining. I talked to an older antique dealer who went and he wasn't too thrilled either.
Well, SoCal parking and admissions are going to be higher than most places in the US. Is LA and the SoCal area a good for coin collecting? I sort of knew attendance would not be as good as Chicago. I hate Rosemont and its mafia practices, but the Midwest location seems ideal.
From what I read purchases under $1,500 had sales tax applied in Anaheim. There was no sales tax in Rosemont. That alone could make a huge difference for the average collector and dealer.
I was never charged sales tax and it didn't seem to be "built in" either and all my purchases from various dealers were nowhere near $1500
All the dealers are just "trading" with other dealers. There's no sales tax, and probably no reporting on taxes either.
thanks for the responses. I cannot believe there are states that still charge sales tax for coin purchases. Oh I forgot...this is California.
OK, I went to the Pre-show in Anaheim cause I had a free ticket...big disappointment, mostly dealers doing business with other dealers. Came back for the World Fair Of Money show and was positively impressed. Lots of dealers, more than I remember from Long Beach a couple of years ago. Didn't pay any sales tax.
Well aren't you the odd man out. It was pretty good for finding deals and dealers did have an ample stock but imo the energy on the floor was a letdown however being my first WFoM maybe my expectations were too high. If I went to the PNG first like you maybe my perception would've been different though
I really enjoyed the Anaheim show. My wife was with me, and there was a lot more there to interest her than the typical Long Beach show. She's into ancient, medieval, and more recent European history. She actually bought a few coins ... I'm still stunned. I was also nice to view some Heritage coins in person before I bid on them. A highlight was meeting and hanging out with @Cascade and @C-B-D. Charmy took our pic and posted it in her report. Cal
