Hello, friends! I can't decipher from the inscription here if the emperor is Gordian III... Yes, I know the condition is kind of crappy, but I got it free! Any thoughts? Thanks!
I'm gonna say no. Pic isn't very readable. Try for a better one. My pic taking skills aren't the best either.
Thanks, Smojo! Unfortunately, I can't produce better pictures since the coin is in very bad condition ...
Gordian III yes. Sestertius no. It is a Provincial of Tarsus, I believe. It may not even be on these six pages. There are a lot of them. Happy hunting. https://www.cngcoins.com/Search.asp...R_TYPE_ID_2=1&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_4=1
I can understand that. I got an uncleaned a while back. A cleaning did very little help. Was difficult to attribute it. But I finally deciphered it.
@monetarium hopefully this is just the beginning of your foray into ancient coin collection! I suggest you get some calipers and a scale that can measure grams to the hundredths (0.00). Knowing the dimensions can help others. Just a tip!
Sound advice. I have to share my wife's scale I actually pretty much just took it from her some time ago. But add a good loupe as well a 10x power is sufficient. I have 5, 10 & 20 power.
Thanks, Jwt ! Actually, I do have a scale with both the English/Metric system and I use it often, but mainly for silver coins. For big copper/bronze coins like this one, I try to identify them by the size...
