Here is a Celtic Drachm I got awhile ago, mainly for, what I assume is a die crack at 1 o'clock? Looks like a spear shaft in the head. Celtic, Lower Danube, Uncertain tribe. 2nd century B.C. AR Drachm Imitating Philip III of Macedon O: Head of Herakles wearing lions skin headdress knotted at throat, right. R: Zeus enthroned holding eagle. 19mm 3.61g Lanz 939; CCCBM I 203-4
Uncertain Tribe Late 2nd c. to early 1st c. BC Mint: Lower Danube AR Drachm Obvs: Imitation of head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin. Revs: Zeus seated holding object, amphora in left field. 20mm, 2.9g Lanz 897, KMW 1463
I find drawn to these Celtic coins. I'm not so sure that is a die crack. Perhaps some crud in the die maybe. I mean, what the heck do I know? Here is my sole Celtic example: EASTERN CELTS, DACHREITER TYPE AR Drachm OBVERSE: Celticized head of Zeus right REVERSE: Celticized horseman riding left; wheel of four spokes above Struck by the Skordoski in Syrmia, 2d Century BC 1.87g, 14mm OTA 188/2-3
Ouch, it must hurt having a spear through your head for 2,200 years. Awesome coin @Mat . I love it! You've been getting some pretty cool stuff lately.
NICE Celtic Mat! The BOLT to the head looks awesome! My Celtics: DANUBE EASTERN EUROPE. Imitation of Philip II of Macedon. Drachm (3rd-2nd centuries BC). "Kugelwange" type. Obv: Laureate head of Zeus right. Rev: Horse advancing left. Lanz 509 Weight: 2.49 g. Diameter: 15 mm. Eastern Europe. Imitating Philip II of Macedon. 2nd century B.C. AR drachm. Kugelwange type. Struck by the Skordoski in Syrmia. Phase B. Lanz 507
here's the coin mat upgraded from... CELTIC, Lower Danube, Uncertain tribe. 2nd century B.C. AR Drachm O: Head of Herakles wearing lionskin headdress knotted at throat, right. R: Zeus enthroned holding eagle. 17mm 3.42g Lanz 939 Ex. Mat collectin!
INCENI: CELTIC BRITAIN the Inceni Queen Boudicca, 61 AD. AR Unit (Quinarius size) 1.03 g Obv: Celticized head right Rev: Celticized horse galloping right. Ref: vArs.794. And even though this is disputed as money, it is more likely a Horse Bridle Ring...I still think it was of value to the Celts! Celtic AE Ring 800-500 BC
It was a little more harder and a little more dinero to get a decently centered version to include most of the devices. But the rich history surrounding this coin as well as the implication of Queen Boudicca being the inspiration for Britannica... just made it a "had to have" historical marker! Met a serious collector at one of my recent Shows that had over 600 Celtics. It looks to be an interesting focus that I may pursue in future years. I have always enjoyed the rich history of the Celts as they migrated and settled across Europe...
Sweet!! => man Mat, that's a very cool OP-addition (congrats) Celtic, eh? ... yah, I have a few humble examples ... Macedonian Under Philip V & Perseus (Celtic) 187-168 BC Strymon & Trident Celtic Gaul, Senones AE Cast Potin 100-50 BC Celtic head & Celtic horse with pellets Celtic Tribes of Gaul, Coriosolite Class IIB, Billon Stater 80-50 BC Celtic Head & Celtic Horse with Boar
Great coins, Steve. I like the designs of many of them & would love to add a few more as life goes on. Couldn't do a side collection as I have so many other side interests, don't need another.
Cool posts everyone!! I seem to have only one modest example...but the OP and Brian's Boudicca have me VERY interested (dang all of you!!) Danubian Celt bronze:
