So having thrown reason to the wind recently and picking up some more coins, I was still very interested in that CT colonial copper so I went back to my LCS today. I'm very happy that I did. I did end up getting that copper, but I got a slew of other goodies as well. I saw the two best looking 2-cent pieces I've had the privilege of seeing so, naturally, I got those. There was also a Franklin half with some kind of minor mint error (planchet something) so, naturally, I got that. Before spewing out all of the other coins I got today, I'll just get to the interesting part. The Franklin has the bugs bunny variety, one of the two 2-cents has a RPD, and I'm a sucker for Morgans so, naturally, I got another one of those. These are all raw coins, so if anybody here would like to chime in with your thoughts on what grade they are, please feel free to do so! I'm super happy with today's acquisitions, and hopefully you enjoy seeing these coins as much as I do! Oh yeah, I got an old Whitman album for Jefferson nickels with 36 nickels in it already for $2, too. I mentioned to the owner that I was interested in doing a Jefferson series and he happily sold it to me for a great deal. Copyright date is 1952 on the book.
Nice looking, especially the two cent. You have the variety with tip of the 5 curved. The date is repunched and the Franklin looks like a faint Bugs Bunny one.
Your first two center is gorgeous. The others are not bad either. Bet that dealer was happy to see you. It's always great to shop local and come home happy! Thanks for sharing your good fortune.
Upon further inspection, I've figured out that it's a 1787 draped bust left, and not the Hercules variety. Regardless, I'm still happy with it, and it's now my oldest coin I own!
I guess I have to admit defeat, that one is too far gone to ID from the pictures. Good thing about Connecticuts though, if you want a better example, decent looking pieces can be had reasonably. Pretty easy to find for around $30 or so.
Nice pickups; In the Flynn book the 2c is a "1865F Repunched Date RPD-001" "Triple Punched Date 1865/1865/18" in a very nice AU. I believe the "F" is for fancy five.
I am still shocked that I was able to get both of these coins, as I typically shy away from spending as much on them as I did. $100 for the 1st 2-cent and I think $53 for the RPD 2-cent. But I've been wanting one in better shape for a little while now, so that itch has been scratched for sure!
2c are an underrated series. The entire series estimated surviving population, on PCGS, fits within the one for just the, also PCGS numbers, 1909-S VDB.
