Hello all, Thanks for letting me join the forum. I am new to the coin collecting game. And I have lots of questions about coins I have. But I won't bore you with them all. But I do have this 2021 quarter that has a different color to it and I was wondering if that was a clad issue (I think that's what the term is). I have uploaded photos and each photo but one says if the flash was on or off. Please take a look and give me your opinion. I appreciate any help in advance and have a good one. Jack
Hey Jack! Welcome to CT. It appears to be some sort of environmental damage even though it's a newer coin. "Most damaging impairments to the surface of a coin are often divided into two large groups. The most common are known as “environmental damage.” By definition, environmental damage is any serious and often permanent change to the surface metal of a coin. This type of damage occurs when surface metal oxidizes due to the interaction of chemicals and moisture in the immediate environment. Environmental damage ranges from mild to severe." From the NGC website.
The Cupronickel clad was affected by long time exposure to a harsh chemical or the elements. Also.. it's not a Quater it's a Quarter Welcome to Cointalk
Maybe, I'm a native New Yorker but I grew up in Lower Manhattan, so I don't have the Brooklyn accent.
Ha Ha thanks for busting my balls with the Quatar. Down in the body of the post quarter was spelt correctly. I didn't read any rules upon joining about correct grammar or such. Nor did it say the grammar police are watching.... . I appreciate the replies. Oh, I am from Arkansas and I would pronounce it as Qua-tar. One other thing. Recently had a fire at my rent house and I had some coins that got caught in the fire. Some made it out unscathed, and some have the jacket or books that they were, in melted around them. Is there a way to get the melted plastic off the coins, and is there someway I can clean these coins??????? Thanks for your time.
@jackislost, welcome to CT Jack! We members don't get to participate in the vetting process; it's pretty much, "if you're willing to join, you're in!". You'll figure out the level of acceptance by the post "bashing" . Yes, while spelling, punctuation, & grammer in general (see what I did there? ) can be important in most communications, but we usually understand the message; is it "Let's eat kids!" or "Let's eat, kids!". Sal gave you some good info; we have a vast amount of experience & expertise (& opinions ), so don't hesitate to ask questions or post coins of interest. That's what keeps most of us coming back! Most importantly, have fun with this!
You got to hate those unwritten rules. You never have a chance because you never see it coming. Dang unwritten rules.
