In 1990 - 1991 the mint began putting the mint mark on the master die. In 1996 it was placed on the design. Prior to this the mint mark was added manually to the working dies at the branch mints. This led to variations in the mint mark placement.
I read about a 1975 D Jefferson. I came across this 1969 D Jefferson thought it was in the same category.
I try to gain knowledge by reading and looking through coins and more coins, thinking I found something and get discouraged after posting. Maybe it's time to cash in my coins and call it good!
I'm thinking you may be trying to hard to find an error. For whatever reason a high payout ect.. If you're going to collect do it for a personal passion, you'll enjoy the hobby so much better. I don't look for errors if I happen upon one awsome. Just means a cool coin to add to my collection. Don't let yourself get discouraged. Find a type that you like then go from there.
Don't get discouraged... it's tough, I know, but you'll get the hang of it. If the "special" or valuable coins were easy to find, they wouldn't be that special or valuable. There's a young lady here by the name of "Sheila" who may be able to offer you some inspiration. She's been in your shoes, but stuck with it and has had a few fairly impressive finds. Perhaps you should check out some of her threads.
Do not be discouraged. You will get better at seeing and finding things as you do it longer. The hunt is half the fun.
Sheila is real nice, I don't want to mispell her name but starts with an R. I do think she can give you @Sassy some great advice to start out with. I know she started with Lincoln cents then up from there the more she learned. CT is a great forum to learn from. I know I have & I've been doing it for years. Great group of people here you can learn a lot.
Haha... I couldn't quite remember it either, and didn't want to completely blow it. Let me see if I can find her.... Edit: here we are.... @Sheila Ruley
You're very welcome.... I edited my previous post to "tag" her after locating her name, so hopefully she'll see/get it.
With persistence you will get there, looking at pics and reading are a great place to start. When you find that first one. It is a lot easier to distinguish what they look like. Looking at the MS, Au, then put xf and lower into rolls to come back to, helped me distinguish what each coin should look like first. Damaged coins are difficult to find variety's. Good luck, hope we get to see some of your finds!
I feel your pain! Just take one step a a time. Most of the guys here have forgotten more about coins then I'll ever know. For example: If I look at a 55 Lincoln long enough, it starts to turn into a 55 doubled die! No one can convince me it's not. Until I come here for a reality check. That's when it hits me between the eyes! Hey, I'm getting ready to post something on another thread. I'll tag you on it when I do. I'll let you watch, as I will probably get my head handed to me again by the expects. I've been beating the bushes a busting my ass! I'm hoping this time it will be a winner.
