Opinions needed via vote. I rediscovered this $25 roll of Sacajawea dollars I bought many years ago. As you can see, one of the enders is a 2000-P. I have zero recollection if I bought the roll in the year 2000, which would make every coin in the roll, all 25 of them, dated 2000 since that was the inaugural year of the Sac's. Or did I pick it up subsequent to 2000 and it contains a variety of years, and just lucky the ender is a 2000? I just don't remember. I could very well have bought a roll and put it aside because it was the first year of issue. The problem now is, I'm a lot older and time has taken parts of my memory so there ain't no way I can remember that time-line. For the record, when I say I bought the roll, I mean I 'bought' it from my local Savings and Loan for face value. Could there be a Cheerios dollar in it? Who knows? Sooooo, should I leave it unsearched and put it back in its previous resting place? Or should I open it and look for the elusive Cheerio buck?
Probably no Cheerio's coin in the roll. Particularly if it was from 2000, since it would take time for a Sac to get from a box of cereal back to a roll. If it were me, I would open it.
For now I’d let the roll stay as is. Think about it. There’s no reason to rush opening it. You can do that anytime. How long have you had the safe? If you bought this roll why did you put it in the safe? Ask yourself many questions and maybe you’ll jog your thoughts. Taking your time and thinking about it takes time but what’s the rush? Many a time I’ve thought about something and something happens that makes me remember. Any births in your family for that year? Why would you have bought just one rolling you were searching or speculating on it? Let it be for now and you can always open it later. Once opened, it’s always opened. You remember buying it from your local Savings and Loan Association right? If the entire roll is all 2000’s you won’t find a Cheerios dollar. Does that S & L still use that type of wrapper? Just think outside the box for a long while before doing something you may regret.
I would open only because I had several rolls of them I cracked and they had developed some nasty spots from the paper wrapper. I salvaged what I could and sold the rest. That one ender on your roll is not looking so good.
I bought a delinquent safety deposit box auction that had a bunch of these rolls at face value but they were the mint wrapped ones in the yellow roll. I saved a roll of 2000 P and 2000 D opening up the rest. I did find some die crack errors in two rolls but the rest went back into circulation.
The guy who is, to this day, opening up coin purchase packages from thirty years ago is telling you to leave it as is...........sheesh.
I would have to take a look if it was me. I would not be able to avoid having a look at what I have. I also don't plan on issuing any apologies for how I feel. Open the thing and let us all see.
@Collecting Nut is right. First you need to confirm your intent for the roll. Are you planning on using the mystery of an unsearched roll in a sale in the future? If so, obviously, store it as is, keeping extraneous movement to a minimum because those obverse and reverse sides are making contact inside that roll. Personally, I keep no coins in rolls or stacks due to damage risks. And, as @tommyc03 pointed out, the ender is showing evidence of circulation which logically points to a CWR later than 2000. By giving each coin in the roll some deserving TLC you identify and protect keepers, with the off-chance of finding one with the enhanced tail feathers (ETF). That’s my 2 cents worth, I don’t expect any pocket change in return…imo…Spark
Open that up! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Very unlikely for a Cheerios dollar, but maybe a wounded eagle.
I got five rolls of bank rolled 64 JFK halves. I figure if I open them up, then I gotta find 100 flips as well as another box to store them all in so I leave them alone. As clumsy as I am these days I would probably drop the one MS69 that came out of all those halves….. You have twenty flips laying around for the freed Sacy’s?
I do, actually! I may not have the immediate means to acquire so many new coins but I do have accommodations for them if they happen to fall into my lap!
You all make compelling arguments for opening this bad boy up! Thank you. Even you, Sal, Randy, Larry and Shawn make wonderfully compelling 'points' for releasing these bad boys from captivity  , as eloquently stated here :hilarious:
