New addition....now have 22 AR Denarius! AR Denarius ND circa 215AD Rome Mint 3.13g./21mm. obv. Empress facing right rev. Charioteer Today, I have a "horse theme" Poor Julia was the wife of a brutal Emperor, namely Septimus Severus....who was known for exterminating his political rivals.
Very nice Panzerman! Severus was a harsh Emperor but he wasn't a cold blooded killer like his son(Caracalla), though I wouldn't want to get on his bad side.
Thats a great coin with a popular reverse. I have many of her but will just toss one. Julia Domna (194 - 217 A.D.) AR Antoninianus O: IVLIA PIA FELIX AVG, Diademed and draped bust right, resting on crescent. R: VENVS GENETRIX, Venus seated left holding hand out, and scepter. Rome 4.5g 23mm RIC 388a, RSC 206a
Thanks all! Best news is that a collector from Quebec City has a small collection of Roman coins, that he wants to trade me for butterflies/moths. There are four Aurei all mint state/FDC. One is a AV version of my AR Denarius, all four were from Sothebys Auction back in 1980s. We will make deal this Winter when I am "unemployed" There are Julia Domna/Volusian/Philip I/Numerian Aurei for sure....
Man, I would most definitely trade my butterfly collection for those coins, except that I don't have a butterfly collection. That's a very nice JD with a very interesting reverse I would love to have. Do me a favor. Go back to the Gold and leave the siver for those of us in the head count.
Actually as far as I known, Imperial issues Julia Domna same as AR with charioteer reverse (fantastic coin/looks prooflike) Volusian Numerian Philip I Think he wants 250K in bugs for them. Two were originally in Enrico Caruso Collection.
Wonderful OP denarii @panzerman !!! Love the reverse!! Hmm, Now I'm tempted to buy a butterfly net off e-Bay....Are 'gypsy moths' worth anything Great posts guys!!
Sweet looking Domna denarius. @panzerman We are like opposites. When I start working again in the fall, I'm going to be adding a few more Julia Domna coins to my collection.
Me too! I so wish that there would have been a Postumus Aureus to post for Doug! really like that guys Aurei....SOOOOOO $$$$$$$$$.
Mikey...thanks! I actually never caught on moth/butterfly!!!!! Bought them all from dealers/auctions. Always got perfect AI specimens, I paid probably 150K for all my bugs, after 25 years value appreciated to 20 times what I paid....good investment.
