PCGS Museum of Coin Holders

PCGS just launched an online museum of their coin holders. You can view it at:

The Museum features every generation of PCGS slab since its creation. when you click on one of them it tells you the difference in the slab in comparison to the previous version. This will allow collectors to more easily identify which Gen. slab they have.

Anyone know if PCGS is still having the parts used in their slabs manufactured in China?

 

I wonder how the PCGS list compares to the list of @Conder101 ?

Can't be 4.1 as it's the newer hologram (St Gaudens), however it can't be 4.2 (doesn't say CLCT) nor 4.3 either as the cert number is too low. So which type is it?

Maybe I should resubmit it to get it back as a MS64 in a gen 6 holder...

 

Now you can make a slab type set. I wonder if PCGS will now make a registry listing for it.

That's actually a pretty cool feature they added not only for the slab collectors but now people have a tool where they don't automatically assume a holder is fake because it isn't the current one. Hopefully NGC will do something similar

Actually it is fairly accurate. Unfortunately on my browser it doesn't tell you the differences between the generations when you click them and it doesn't show the back of the slabs there are some differences there as well. I still think their Gen 2 should come after the 2.1, and they are missing one between 3.1 and 4.

Their gen 1 is one I had not recognized before. They also don't include the Regency slab, or the different label arrangement they used on the slabs for silver eagles and Commems in the 1999 - 2001 era.

 

I have one single PCGS certified coin. It is this.

 

Mine if you click it the reverse will show and has a small write up about each of them though it is far from detailed it does point out the major differences

Seeing that image with the descriptions lets me know that they are missing another one. There is another variety between their 1.2 and their 2.0 (it has the same label as their 1.2 and the plastic collar that their 2.0. 2.1 and 2.2 has.) It looks a LOT like their 2.1, but it doesn't have PCGS at the top of the label.

The one I mentioned earlier between their 3.1 and 4.0 is the real first blue label slab. It has the blue label like their 4.0 with the barcode on the back label, but it DOESN'T have the coin and series numbers on the label. That slab variety is very scarce to rare I believe.

The image above is also missing several varieties.

They said on the CU forum they were just trying to get something up for the ANA and that they have some more to add. They didn't mention what else will be going up but sounds like it is a work in progress right now

 

I'm not convinced that their 1.1 and 1.2 are actually different varieties. It it is then I would agree the date of use for 1.2 is wrong. I have seen a few rattlers that seemed to have a colored tint to them (nothing as dark as what they show in their image) but the vast majority of them have been white. And the first slabs with the plastic collar around them also had white labels. Well at least they look white to me.

But on the bright side, I kept an 1885 (P) in MS-64 and sent to CAC for a green bean. It's in the 2.1 transitional from Oct. to Dec. of 1989.......I SWORE they were the same holder type, but just now saw the perforation difference. At least I still have 1 :-(
