My suggestion is to look at only newly minted coinage until you understand what each denomination is supposed to look like. Errors are not beat up and destroyed coins that have lived a hard life. And even if a beat up damaged coin had an error on it. It wouldn't have any value above face value. The errors and varieties that have a premium are always the ones that are Mint state or AU.
