I've been less active in coins the since covid and am getting back into it again. I am curious what people are using as a coin price index, like gray sheet these days.
I'm also trying to get a sense of the market again, what's hot what's not? Is it like my other hobby and in the toilet like pokemon?

If the FUN Show was any indication, the market for collector coins is still quite active. I won't point to specific areas being hotter than others, as my inventory covers limited ground.

Grey Sheet is still used by dealers and others for generic coins (some will try to quote it for eye appealing and PQ items but that's just a waste of everyone's time). Auction results (eBay, HA, GC, Stacks) are your best bet for prices for items that sell fairly frequently. More unique items-just like always-take a combo of auction research plus your feel for how much it's worth to you (will you bid up because another won't show up or will you be less aggressive since there are other options that could become available).

As far as the market, some are reporting a slow down. Certain items don't sell as quickly or at the same prices as a year or two ago. However, most PQ (eye appealing, nicely toned, older holder, etc) coins continue to bring strong results (even new records). And even some of the common stuff (generic MS 65 Morgans or Peace Dollars) are still near recent highs (well above the pre-2020 levels).

The coin market is strong and most dealers I know use the grey sheet.

The grey sheet is good, but the eye of the tiger is you! Some areas of the market our strong others are waning, in a slow way. If you are into reading get the 2024 Red Book, Cherry Pickers Guide 5th & 6th Editions, Numismatic News, Coins, and more. A few in my library of many. Welcome back, good luck.

Far from it ! Overall the coin market is approximately 35% higher than the lowest it's been since 2003. And still climbing.

Greysheet is wholesale. The CDN CPG a retail publication is based on greysheet bid. Many dealers use this for retail pricing / MV reference then any offers to sellers off bourse or auction bids are a pct of CPG / pct of what they think can sell an item for. Consistent w CDN bid and Skips a step, saves cost. With my real-time CDN CPG phone app I can price material for retail or quickly make bids / offers. It even has retail for CAC / CACG. I like consistency and quick execution. For US coin market performance I refer to the PCGS 3000 and it’s specific areas.

The dollar market has been weak in recent weeks however the CACG slabs recently released seeing aggressive bidding / prices realized off the bourse and auction. Expect to step up and pay the money in that venue.

That is not a complete representation of what the CDN Monthly is.

Disagree with comment above - CDN greysheet prices are WHOLESALE / dealer to dealer at best. Usually bid plus 5pct. They are NOT retail prices. Dealer offers off bourse or a shop may be back of wholesale bid. Offers can vary based on the market. Everybody knows CDN greysheet is a different monthly than the CDN CPG.

For CDN Bid based retail / MV refer to CPG.

I understand . You disagree on many things, and without a doubt that is a tendency in our communication.

So, Do you have the Jan. 2024 VOL. VII, NO.1, of the CDN Monthly GREYSHEET, (the wholesale pricing report)?
If so, please turn to Pg. 10, the bottom of the page, the Box titled "USING THE GREYSHEET". Note that the same use instruction is printed in every issue.

I am a real bourse room dealer / are you? If you have something concrete to add…..my point is simply greysheet is a wholesale bid publication NOT retail.

    Good Lord!

A "bourse room dealer"! I sincerely apologize. I did not know the level of knowledge I was communicating with.

Anyway, did you review the page I am referring to? It is sort of basic information that any collector/dealer/buyer/seller/Grader/Evaluator/Researcher (and "bourse room dealer") needs to be aware of, when interpreting GREYSHEET.

But, with you "being a bourse room dealer", I am humbled and should have known you don't need no stinkin' information.

Truth in editing: added a "u" and added a ")".

Based on how many coins I get blown out on bidding on Great Collections each week, I would say its alive and well!
