Personally, i like the OP's coin as it is. The rust, or whatever, really brings out the design of the coin. If it were a high grade key coin, then I would cringe, but as a 'common' it has great character. It creates a near pefect picture. Wouldn't it make a great poster?

I am not certain, but I sure do like that error cent in your avatar, even though that is an off topic.

I'm not sure what CLR is but I use white vinegar full strength, followed by a cleaning with diluted water to clean up nasty Buffalos that are otherwise unidentifiable, especially dateless. Of course I would not do this to any good ones that are identifiable. This does not work on rust and I've never used acetone on nickel before. I have always assumed that the rusty ones were detector finds that interacted with ground minerals.

Most Of of the nickels I find, are rusted pre 64, and newer than 64 are corroded and stained. I detect in the city mostly.
By the way clr is to remove calcium lime and rust.
Not that I am promoting using it!

    Still trying to classify it
Either winged D or looks like it could be an unknown RPM. It looks like quadruple serifs.

You should consider using the obverse pic as your avatar.

It's hard to see. But there is some rust- hair to pony tail. Definitely not a candidate for cleaning. 20160812_003409.jpg
