Hi everyone, looking for your expertise and opinions on authenticity of this coin that I was gifted by a friend. It’s non magnetic but I don’t have a proper scale to get its exact weight… kitchen scale says 27g.
The details do not seem to match. But I am not educated in this series, or even russian coins. Below the bust is supposed to be СПБ. I am not sure what yours reads. I am unable to find any rubles with those 3 letters. Here are the specs Composition Silver (.802) Weight 25.85 g Diameter 41 mm
NGC World Catalog has it listed as: Russia 1749 MMA Rouble. MMA (Americanized) =. Moscow Mint. CNB (Americanized) = St. Petersburg (I don’t have access to Russian alphabet). You have to scroll down to reveal the listing. I’d say it indicates authenticity. …imo…Spark

I just went there. C# 19.1 All the metrics you found from auctions is there. A description of both sides is there. The Op coin is XF40-45 and it lists for $950 at XF40. I would have thought this coin was fake, except that Mr. Reference. @Spark1951 chimed in. I searched for an hour at least and couldn't find it. The fabric of the coin looked right. The weight is off. Could be a contemporary counterfeit. Some of the best counterfeits are made out of a partially correct metal content.
I don't like it. The color is off to me and the reverse really bothers me. It is much nicer than the obverse and with as nice as it is there should be more detail in the center where St George is. Just my opinion, not condemning it.
It's 100% wrong. Too circular. Coins from this era are a bit crude. Inscribed edge are only from coins issued after 1800s.
With the experience I have the coin does seem a bit off to me. The all round softening of the strike, particularly the lettering. But it doesn’t seem to be a “in your face” kinda fake like the one presented on the replica site. It kinda threw me off a bit so I thought best to ask in case anyone was closer to these type of coins. I’m keeping it under a 70/30 fake/undetermined status.
The lack of Center details also caught my eye, even if one was to argue it could be due to a weaker (highly used) punch.
yes provenance… I don’t really know details but she told me it had been bought along with a couple of other coins in a one of those flea markets where people can come in and sell their “old” stuff.
I can guarantee it's not genuine. The edge is from a later era. You can send it for authenticity and cry for a refund later.
