1814 Half Dollar-Obverse Shows Errors

Any Bust coin is great to have and this one is no exception. It’s in decent shape and the condition is good as it hasn’t been beaten up over the years.

There were 1,039,075 minted so a bit on the low side. I was drawn to the obverse rim. The date, the stars and well, just about the entire design is totally different than it should be. It looks scrapped from the design to the rim but it’s not. Also around Liberty’s head it shows.
But the best is below Liberty’s bust just about the date. There is a beautiful die clash that looks doubled. It’s from the ribbon of PLURIBUS. Even the outline of the ribbon is clear. I was thrilled to pick up this Bust Half.

I'm out of my wheelhouse on these but very nice coin. Wondering if the stretching is from a worn die or something wrong with the collar?

 

The stretched out star points is not overly uncommon on some years of busties

 

I've seen these stretched star points on many of these before, but never this much. Nice coin and find.

 

That is a pretty amazing coin. It is an extremely late die state and the clash is a cherry on top. Great pickup - wish I'd had a shot at it.

 

That was my thought as well, at least the worn die was.

 

I know but it’s all of them. It’s on everything around the obverse rim and her head.

Thanks. I first thought of a worn die but then the mintage was low so I dismissed that. Then I thought it must be the die as I added into my thoughts that the equipment to mint was much different in 1814 than it is today. It’s a great coin!

 

Monumental clash and extreme worn dies. Those were absolutely done. Love it. Use them until they shatter

 

You see them on extremely worn dies. I’ve had a few they’re touching the rim. And it becomes more evident as the coin wears. Especially with a circam look as this

 

I’ve never seen a coin that is from a worn die on the entire obverse like this and then add in that clash and it was a no brainer buying this coin.

 

I’ve seen the die wear. I think that’s by far the deepest clash I’ve seen especially on a bustie. I’m more used to them on smaller denominations especially silver trimes and half dimes

 

That is a strong clash as it’s very detailed.

 

Very nice coin! O-103 is one of my favorites just because of how impressive the clash usually is. Definitely one of the latest die state examples I have seen.
