Ages ago when I recieved a 1887 morgan silver dollar as a christmas present. I recently took a look at it and when I took a picture of it I thought the top arrow looked a bit off to me. I recall seeing photos of other morgans and didnt see that.

    Is this possibly an error?

I am thinking damage. There appears to be scrapes in the field beyond the arrowhead tips.

    PMD to the arrow.

Why does the top right arrow have part of it on top of the center or second arrow then? Thats what I dont understand. It's almost like a line sitting on top of the second arrow.

I checked through the 87 VAMs didn't find anything even close. so is either PMD or possibly an undocumented die chip but that's unlikely IMHO...

It looks raised, which is interesting.

Looks like the "top" arrow took a hit and some of the metal has moved on top of the next arrow. Like others have said, PMD.

Looks like that arrow was hit by something strong enough to move silver.

It's from the die, nothing hit that.

    Maybe a retained lamination.

    Why do you say that?

I can't think of anything that would leave that mark. It looks like a defect on the die.

I think it needs examined under at least 30x.:pompous:

The last picture looks even more like a hit that moved metal around.
Find an experienced dealer and have him examine it in hand for the best assessment.
