At least I think I did fair on a ebay purchase. In an auction I bought 7 1967 Kennedy halves for $16.01 plus $5.65 shipping which totaled $21.66. IF my information about today's spot and IF my math is right, I paid $3.09 each and spot price for 40% silver halves would 4.19297 grams X $0.75 = $3.14 each. Considering my LCS sales all silver including generic above spot I thought this was decent for putting in my little stack. What do you think?
I would have bought them at that price. Even with the mintage figures, the future numismatic market value would rise. Based on the performance of silver since 2000 and the cost per coin on the numismatic end then and now. So, yes, I think it was a smart purchase long term.
I guess it depends on what you can buy them for. My LCS buys them for $2.39 and sales them for $3.89. Not to mention you have gas money driving to your LCS to purchase them. My price was still under spot plus I didn't spend any gas money to go drive anywhere to pick them up, they were delivered to my mail box. So all in all I don't feel it's a little high. I was also surprised that the condition on these were really pretty nice.
Dustin, Not sure why you're debating @Collecting Nut, you specially asked, "What do you think?". I also think the price was a bit high. My problem with 40% silvers, of which I have many, are that most LCS's by me won't even buy them. There isn't much interest in them from collectors, and it's too expensive to melt them down to recover the 40% silver in them. Bottom line, it just doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, as long as you like them and are satisfied with your purchase.
It was a decent price. In general, though, going by "melt value" for 40% halves is tricky -- 40% trades at a significant discount to 90%, given equivalent silver weights. I used to cruise eBay for underpriced silver lots, then sell what I didn't want to dealers at local coin shows. There was a time or two when I couldn't sell 40% (because none of the dealers would even make an offer on it), and other times when the offers were as low as half melt. For this lot, I could say you came out a winner, but I'd definitely say that the seller came out a loser after fees and shipping.
Debating? It's called a conversation on a forum dedicated to the discussion of coins. Yes, I did ask what do you think as I was engaging in conversation. I posted about a purchase, asked what others thought about said purchase, others gave their opinion concerning the purchase, I pointed out different factors that in my opinion made valid points, such as shipping was included so no gas to LCS, under spot, etc. Again, conversation not a debate.
Ebay is a fun and useful place if you are careful. And that can be said whether you are a buyer or seller. I think I did okay on this one during the holidays. 18 bucks for my first Type I SLQ. Apparently everyone was partying, drinking, or both. I piggybacked it off another purchase so I paid no shipping fee. I'm pleased. My photos are terrible so I'll use the seller's
I recently bought a 1932 Washington quarter on eBay. I probably did pay to much considering the worn condition but I'm fine with that, I wanted a first year Washington quarter. We're talking 8 bucks not 80. I don't want to make a habit of over paying but sometimes a guy will of he wants something. I will have to use the eBay pic since I haven't even received the coin yet.
