Personally, i like the OP's coin as it is. The rust, or whatever, really brings out the design of the coin. If it were a high grade key coin, then I would cringe, but as a 'common' it has great character. It creates a near pefect picture. Wouldn't it make a great poster?
I am not certain, but I sure do like that error cent in your avatar, even though that is an off topic.
I'm not sure what CLR is but I use white vinegar full strength, followed by a cleaning with diluted water to clean up nasty Buffalos that are otherwise unidentifiable, especially dateless. Of course I would not do this to any good ones that are identifiable. This does not work on rust and I've never used acetone on nickel before. I have always assumed that the rusty ones were detector finds that interacted with ground minerals.
Most Of of the nickels I find, are rusted pre 64, and newer than 64 are corroded and stained. I detect in the city mostly. By the way clr is to remove calcium lime and rust. Not that I am promoting using it!
Still trying to classify it Either winged D or looks like it could be an unknown RPM. It looks like quadruple serifs.
It's hard to see. But there is some rust- hair to pony tail. Definitely not a candidate for cleaning.
