What do you think about this one, roman denarius, Ag, 3,4 gr, 40BC, Voconius Vitulus ?

Welcome @andronik. I believe the first and last are fakes. I cannot comment on the other two.

I'm suspicious of all of them but this could be from the photos. I could offer a better explanation later.

The first is a Slavey fake of a Julius Caesar denarius.

  9. The Julius, Philip imitation, and Abdera are either purposeful fantasy pieces, or an attempted forgery (Julius.) I am unable to comment, with veracity, the status of the Follis. As some will say though, if acquired from the same source, "guilty by association."

The Follis looks like a counterfeit. Letters are way too neat and aligned on the reverse.

  12. No problem. If you ever want to purchase anything authentic, stop by the forum and ask for suggestions. Once you go ancient, it's hard to collect any other era.

I can't help but be amused by your reply. As a 30 or so years on & off modern collector who just in the past 3 months started ancient collecting. I find the ancients to be addictive I still buy moderns. Just not as often.

That happened to me. Been collecting for pert-near 50 years. Started Modern, sold collection, ex-patted overseas, came back and was disgusted with all the Slabbing. Had a friend slake my thirst for collecting by appealing to my love for ancient history about 25 years ago... Saved a very few, but cool Modern; Now only collect Ancients!

While none of these fit in that category, there are fakes of ancient coins older than the US. There are many from the 1800's and vast numbers from the 1900's. Whenever you find a collection of 99% US pulled from circulation by grandpa in the 1920's, you can almost count on there being a fake ancient. I visited a coin shop that did not do ancients but had three fake Tiberius denarii which they got in mixed collections of US. They did not know for sure but they were not really shocked when I declined to buy them at any price. Being found in the ground in 1800 means nothing if a coin got there when great grandpa threw it out the window upon finding out he had been fooled.

From the ones I have seen they are usually between 25 and 30mm. They could have used a larger flan but I'm not so sure about that.
