Counting my Saturnalia gift I posted earlier, the year 2023 was not a momentous year for adding to my collection. The two I did add are nice enough and the Saturnalia gift is a fine example. Perhaps this next year I can be more proliferate with my coin collection. 1. EPHESOS, IONIA AE13 OBVERSE: E-[Φ], bee REVERSE: Forepart of stag recumbent left, head right (Uncertain magistrate) Sturck at Ephesos, ca 390-320 BC 12.9 mm, 2.06 g SNG Copenhagen 247-53 2. SINOPE, PAPHLAGONIA AR drachm OBVERSE: Phageta..., magistrate. Head of nymph left, hair in sakkos; aphlaston to left REVERSE: ΣΙΝΟ, sea-eagle on dolphin left; below wings, magistrate's name ΦΑΓΕΤA Struck at Sinope, 350-300 BC 5.61g, 20mm RG 31; SNG BM Black Sea 1490-1; HGC 7, 391 3. MARCUS ANTONIUS AR Denarius OBVERSE: ANT AVG III VIR R P C, Praetorian galley, thyrsos behind prow REVERSE: LEG VIII, eagle between standards Patrae 32-31 BC 3.2g, 17mm RSC 27 ex: St. George Collection
The two you acquired are very nice examples. I missed out in an auction recently on a bee/stag coin, so I still keep looking for one I like. Thanks for sharing
Wonderful Legio VIII. Not going to get close to your Legion collection, but would really like to get a nice SPECVLATORVM someday.
Wonderful coins for 2023, Bing. The Mark Antony denarius is indeed an excellent example. The Ephesos, Ionia AE13 is lovely coin, especially the reverse. The Sinope, Paphlagonia AR drachm is very nicely centered and I really ike the portrait.
Adopt me and make me an heir…..Great Anthony Legion…What would the least expensive one cost?!? of the group. Or is it strictly condition….? Thanks Bing
Bing/ your three additions are great coins. You got me hooked on those MA Leg AR Denari. In your honour I will get one for my collection in 2024. I think 2024 will be fat year for your coll. Merry Christmas! John
When I first began collecting the MA Legionary denarii, a decent example would sell for $75-$100. Now I would guess those same examples will sell for $150 - $300. Inflation is a bugger!
I think the bullion companies are buying up everything at artificially high prices and then trying to sell it for double what they pay. I use to be able to buy high quality Gordian III coins for around $30-$40 now the same common coins are selling at auction for $65-$70 and the bullion companies are selling them for around $150 (for a common Gordian III).
@Bing Its been a very slim few (5) years, for me. (no im not dead) I am relegated to lurking, my coining skills have all but withered away. I popped back in here to say I like the Marc Antony as well, but love the drachm. I'm glad to see you are still in the game. I feel like I may have to resurrect some old threads in order to make a triumphant return. Good on ya brother.
Well, well, well. It's been a long time @Ancientnoob and you've been missed. I hope you stick around and get back to your collecting. Happy New Year my friend.
