I have a web site on reverses unique to a particular emperor.

    http://esty.ancients.info/unique/unique.html

It has been up for a year. Today I added this reverse:

    ADOPTIOr.JPG
Do you recognize which emperor this reverse belongs to? If not, visit the site to find out. If so, visit the site anyway and see the other reverse types.

Please, no spoilers in this thread!

Cool coin and site !!! At first guess I would've chose a 'relative' but not that specific ruler....

A question: Of all the Roman emperors/family/usurpers, how many have at least one type that is unique to them? A related question is what percentage of Roman types can be place to the ruler with certainty looking only at the reverse? Several specialists I know have good ability guessing the reverse seeing only the obverse since they recognize die minutia that only apply to one type but I'm asking here for reverse types and legend combinations that only appear with one obverse personage without going to die identity. I suspect there are more people with one unique type than those that share every type they used but this is just a wild guess based on zero research. Am I wrong? I often am.

I believe that this reverse type is unique to Numerian. All known examples from a single reverse die. It is unusual in that it shows the emperor killing a captive with a sword.

    Numerian

Obv:– IMP C NVMERIANVS AVG, Radiate, cuirassed bust right
Rev:– PACATO-R ORBIS, Emperor advancing right, holding shield and sword, captive, cowering beneath
Minted in Lugdunum (C in exe) Emission 9 Officina 3. Summer A.D. 284
    Reference:– Cohen 41 (30 F). Bastien 618 (2 examples). RIC Unlisted.
