I guarantee that you'll get much more selling them on eBay than to a dealer.

eBay/PayPal fees eat so much. It's almost not worth it. Maybe I'll find someone with deep pockets to buy them all together.

What do you mean you don't have enough posts? I thought you only needed 10. Check with Doug or Peter for authorization.

Morgan's and Peace Dollars are too expensive for me. I can afford Mercury dimes a lot more.

    Those fees are about 10%.

So with eBay you get 90% of their actual value, while a dealer might, if he's feeling generous today, give you 50% of their value.

Yeah, I guess eBay is not worth the trouble or the fees.

On top of 10% to Ebay, you also have shipping costs and PayPal fees. Easily 15% or more. And if you're a new seller - you will not get a lot of buyers. It's better than what a dealer will provide, but it's a crap shoot on the auction as to what they will realize.

They are nice coins, real nice coins. There are just Mercury dimes I like better that have lower populations and have the same cost value coin vs coin.

If you think they're to expensive.. Wait do you like them first of all more than merc. dimes? Set yourself a budget they're not really going anywhere all with the exception of some key dates. You don't have to hurry & buy them up before they're all gone. Make a budget & a plan. Enjoy the hobby don't let the hobby consume you.

There are plenty of CoinTalk members who offer consignment services. Just a thought.

Were you trying to start a sell thread or were you trying to answer or comment with a post on a Buy/Sell/Trade of someone else? The first should be OK, but if it was not your original thread, no member can post ( except mods/admins) Jim

I do believe it is closer to 15% for one without a store, but could be somewhat off on this number.

The real problem may less be the fees than his selling history. Look at how people react oh so skeptically to newer or lower volume sellers on this very board. Right or wrong (wrong), it is something he's going to have to deal with, and this is in addition to the increased likelihood of someone trying to prey on a new seller. It's one thing to start smaller, with lower value items/coins, but to start with something like this could be like cutting off his nose to spite his face. Any dealer willing to only pay 50% of the coins realistic value isn't worth his time or effort, but not all are like this.

    ---

I would also be very skeptical of not so sly self consignment promotions. Nothing against anyone, but you'd be wise to search out the right person to sell for you, perhaps with real world collector-direct connections as opposed to an ebay hawker, where you're going to pay fees on top of consignment fees, extra shipping fees (if sending first to them), paypal fees, etc. A real world dealer may very well be able to place at least a few of his coins with only a phone call or two, and a decent one would do so without charging an arm and a leg. Far too many knock dealers, but the right one (and yes, I do realize they're not always easy to find) can offer benefits above and beyond what straight or assumed vs. ebay numbers may suggest.

A low cost coin with a low population, huh?

Well, I shall recommend none other than the Seated series. There are coins with survival rates under 500 (according to PCGS Coinfacts) that are practically handed out for free compared to some of the 20th C key dates.

Not to mention they are really fun to collect - at least for me. If you feel like you've hit your sweet spot with Mercs, go ahead and collect them. I respect what everyone collects.

If you want an underrated Merc, I'd say 31-D would be a good choice. Mintage is only 30000 more than the 1921 and is much, much cheaper.

Consigning isn't without risks. There have been several threads around the numismatic forums this year about people being owed a lot of money for items they consigned and never got paid for.

eBay will almost certainly bring more than a dealer would offer but again comes with risks. eBay is good for things where an eBay only market seems to exist. What I mean by that is items where the only place you'll sniff those selling prices is on eBay.

Look up the average sale prices for them on eBay and then subtract the fees (ebay fee/paypal fees/cost to ship). Then look up the sale prices on Great Collections and subtract their lower fees. If those numbers are within spitting distance of each other it is a no brainer to send it to Great Collections
