A most unusual find today! While searching through a box of halves I found this coin in the second roll. I've found quite a few of these over the years but this one caught my eye immediately with it's gleaming copper edge and lustrous surfaces, by far the nicest example I've ever found The most unusual part of this is that 5 rolls later I found ANOTHER equally nice specimen!! I would have posted both but I just don't have time to capture more pics now. The coins look much nicer in hand, natural sunlight seems to amplify all the nicks and marks on the coin. Anyone care to offer an opinion as to the grade or advise on sending them to PCGS? Oh, also worth mentioning, I found these too!
@vintagemintage I think you would be wasting your money submitting it for grading. MS64 would be overly generous. Chris
I would definitely not get that graded. Honestly, in order for it to be worthwhile, it would need to be a legitimate MS-65. Even then, the attribution doesn't add much value. Nice find, nevertheless.
I guess you have to go through a whole bunch to pull one. I've been through around 12,000 halves so far, and have not found one.
No telling how many you might have to go through to find one, when I first started looking I only searched about 5,000 (5 boxes) before my first one. I probably searched another 70-80,000 before finding another. I've averaged about 4 boxes a week for close to 2 and a half years, so +/- 500,000 Halves and have found 12 so far, or maybe one out of every 42,000 Halves. This week I found 2 in the same box. Your next Half could be the one. Anybody know of an estimate of how many exist?
I found three in Mint sets... had 20 sets to go through... so 3/20 or 15%. The beauty of small sample sizes!
Out of a total mintage of just over 79,000,000 that would mean that over 2% of all minted exist in MS!!!
