Not even sure where I got this but I’ve only had it a few months. It’s President Richard Nixon and Vice President Spiro T. Agnew. This is not a political statement of any kind nor is this an endorsement. It’s simply a token that resembles the design of the Kennedy Half Dollar. I think it’s nicely done but the design is so close it caught my attention.

It is from the Franklin Mint and those are Gilroy Roberts initials on the obverse who also designed the Kennedy Half Dollar obverse.

I have no idea but it’s the only one I’ve ever seen.

That would explain why it looks so much like the Kennedy Half Dollar.

If you go back 40 years or so, presidential inaugural medals came in one size with one finish, sandblast or matte. Now they are issued in various sizes and finishes.

They are also in multiple metals for the general public. Time was only bronze medals were sold to the pubic. The gold and silver pieces were only given to VIPs. Gold medals went only to the president, vice president and chairman of the inaugural committee. Small numbers of silver medals when to others.

That changed in 1953 when Republicans celebrated by buying a large number of silver medals (for the time). The reason was their man, Eisenhower, was the first Republican to win the Whitehouse in 20 years.

The Kennedy supporters shattered records when they 7,500 silver medals for their man in 1961. To this day the Kennedy silver medal sells for melt based prices.
