A photo like this overexposes the fields of the coin. That washes out details in the fields -- like flow lines, or hits, or scratches. You can take a photo of a prooflike coin and make it look like this. You can also take a photo of a harshly cleaned coin and make it look like this. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, but if the seller has a lot of photos like this, I'm not optimistic.
I can return this one. NGC coin guide lists this year and mint at AU 55- $375. AU 58- $725, MS60 @ $1200. These are not PL prices. I paid $315. Unless somehow it's no better than AU53, I don't see losing. I'll post the photos here for opinions.
gotcha. I like taking pics of my coins, but don’t really adjust them much because I want a pic that shows the coin first and looks good second without adjusting the pic too much. I just don’t have much experience with heavily doctored photos.
The downside risk is that it's a details coin. Just examine it very carefully when you receive it. Was this an eBay auction? You mentioned that the seller is "rated". On eBay, as I understand it, sellers can have negative feedback removed as long as they offer a return. So a coin could be sold and returned five or ten times without any lasting negative feedback, before finally going to a buyer who's happy with it (i.e. doesn't know any better, or waits too long to fuss about it).
The general liability instructor for my insurance broker course put in context. He was an attorney and owned an independent insurance agency. Everything has risk. If you can measure it, you can insure it.If you can’t measure it, walk away
That coin is no great coup. The photos are incredibly juiced. Based on my experience, and certainly not the photography, that coin is not one that will straight grade. The photos hide any bag marks in the fields, and what I see even based on the the inadequate images is cleaning marks. If that seller has a return policy, I would use it, as the coin is, unfortunately, no great deal. That seller is notorious for misrepresenting the condition of coins by photoshopping photos.
That is a very, very, bad photo. It is not very hard at all to take a good photo of a coin. So this seller must be deliberately taking these types of photos to hide flaws. I would not be surprised if the coin you receive is not PL and is highly polished. Keep in mind that if it looks too good to be true it probably is. A seller with any sort of brain function would send the coin in for grading themselves if there was any chance to make more money. (Keep in mind that a lot of eBay sellers are very greedy and only care about the money.)
I don't know, juiced and doctored usually helps with the sellers picture. This one looks like someone threw it on a scanner and went with it. Maybe you caught others sleeping? or others just didn't want to hassle with another Return. The seller didn't gain any points for their photo work. If you hone your skills and bid in the last 8 seconds instead of the hour, you will probably have a drawer full of these maybe even cheaper as others won't have time to spend you're money running up to your max bid. If that was a listing from Auctionkings as people mention, we will be looking forward to your assessment. Good learning experience for all.
Here's a link to the listing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/3950498923...=2047675&ssuid=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY I betcha it doesn't get PL but as you said, as long as it's AU and not a problem coin, you did fine.
I’m just showing this from the photography aspect. Just be careful. I do not purchase but I do see how they modify photos. Sure you can adjust some but there is a difference. I’m just posting the differences. Good luck!
It is a problem coin, for sure. At that price, there are no bargains. Given conditional rarities for 83s, 84s, and 85s, expect to pay a high price for a nice example of any of those dates. No dealer will give any of those away.
The guys that have been on CT… trust them ok. And ask any advice. Truth hurts but I don’t pout too long lol!
In my opinion those photos don't look like they are blown out from too much light. They look like someone hit the magic wand button and changed it to white in order to hide blemishes. That's just my opinion obviously. I hope the coin is satisfactory when you receive it, but if not I'd consider a return under the grounds of deception. Also I wish eBay allowed you to block sellers like this so you just didn't see them or at least saw them as blacklisted.
SEE, I wasn't going to dash his hopes Will see what he says when he has it in hand. Checking the sellers feedback before deciding what to do does save some time and maybe money.
