Cuban Peso/Altered Surface/Potential Counterfeit Inquiry

    Hello

I got back some things from NGC a while ago. I typically do a lot of selling on eBay. The problem with these items returned is that one is a Cuban coin that eBay will not allow me to sell. The other three we're not encapsulated because of the following.

Puerto Rico Token - "Ineligible Type"
1609 GM Germany Taler - "Altered Surface"
    1623 T Germany 60K - "Not suitable for certification"

    My questions are as follows:

    1. Are these coins that are not encapsulated and specified as "altered", "not suitable" and "ineligible" considered "counterfeit"?
    2. I do know that some counterfeit world coins are sought after from some buyers... Does anyone have any recommendations on how I can go about selling these?
    3. The Cuban coin is obviously authentic but again eBay will not allow the selling of Cuban coins so I would like to find somewhere to sell that one as well.

Any information is super helpful. I am not very knowledgeable with coins that come back like this. NGC would not give me any other details besides what they specified on the labels.

For the Puerto Rican token, it simply isn't a type the company certifies. They have a list of tokens and medals they certify on the site. It is quite possible that these tokens don't have an existing catalogue yet.

For the Mansfeld, the site says this:

ALTERED SURFACE - The coin's surfaces have been extensively manipulated. For example, a Proof coin that has been altered to appear to be a Mint State coin, or vice versa. This alteration can often make authentication impossible.

For the Wurttemberg, this is the NGC description:

NOT SUITABLE FOR CERTIFICATION - Coins that are severely damaged or otherwise impaired. The surface condition of these coins makes it impossible for NGC to render a conclusive opinion about authenticity, Details Grade or both. The grading fee is refunded less a $5 handling fee.

I think this is often used for coins that have met an excessive number of details crieria.

As far authenticity, the German coins NGC isn't willing to put their name on. You could probably sell them on Facebook or Instagram, but expect to give a very steep discount due to the nature of their problems.

The Cuban coin can be sold on FB or Instagram too or the website usacoinbook. On FB there's also a group called the Cuban Coin Collectors society or something if that nature that regularly sells Cuban coins.

I see the token as a curiosity, but I'm sure someone would buy it.

I would love to see a better picture of the Puerto Rico token. The side with the number 2.

Did you specify whether you wanted details grading?

Coins for NGC Details Grading — Coins with detrimental
surface conditions, including coins that have been net
graded or described as genuine by other companies
can be crossed to a holder with an NGC Details label by
writing DETAILS in the CrossOver Min. Grade column. If
DETAILS is requested and a coin is eligible for numerical
grade, a numerical grade will be assigned. And vice versa,
if a numerically graded coin has a detrimental surface
condition, it will be NGC Details Graded if DETAILS has
    been specified.

You are looking at the crossover section while the original poster appears to have sent these coins in raw.
Raw coins will automatically be put in details holders unless you specify not to holder details coins.
"Altered Surface" is one of several details grades where NGC will not put the coin in any holder (PCGS and Anacs will put it in a details holder).

Doesn't ICG have a details slab they use?

ICG would also put altered surfaces into a slab (found an example online). NGC seems to be the only one that won't (I have a Morgan that came back unslabbed with just the NGC label "altered surface" a few years ago).

I think they also do a counterfeit slab. Just thinking about it.

They do have a counterfeit slab. I'm not sure what they would do if they were not able to make a decision ...or is that only NGC/PCGS and ICG always makes a call one way or another?

    I really don't know either.

Sorry, that was all I could find on the NGC site. It would be useful to know if the OP opted to holder details grade coins or not.
