Sorry about the heading! It’s late! When you see a coin graded by ICG are the coins graded on a level compared to PCGS or NGC

The top three TOG’s are PCGS, NGC and ANACS. ICG would fall fourth in my opinion. While the standard for grading is basically the same each of the granting services do have some minor differences.

Nothing wrong with ICG, they just don't get the push like the others.

ICG would rank about #4 in my estimation, as well. I am not familiar with any "IGS" service as mentioned in the title.

Thanks for your help! When they slab up a coin, are their holders similar in size with PCGS, NGC and ANACS?

    Yes.

They are a competent service. eBay, for example, accepts PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and ICG. Anything else is considered uncertified. I kind of share that opinion. Except there is that new CACG, which is backed by CAC and therefore likely to become accepted in the marketplace. And I also consider ICCS valid for Canadian coins. But generally speaking, if it's not in the top tier (PCGS, NGC), or the second tier (ANACS, ICG), I treat it like a raw coin.

Only those top four (with perhaps the new CACG soon) get widely recognized for the certification of US coins.

Good to know. I just spent some of my Xmas funds on myself and made some eBay seller happy!

The sell price of a NGC or PCGS graded coin will normally bring a more money than an ANACS, and usually a little more for ANACS than an ICG. There are exceptions, but I think this is usually the way it goes. Is it really that NCG and PCGS do a better job of grading, more consistent, or is it just reputation? Personally I have gotten to like ANACS graded coins. I personally think they do just as well and I like the discount. The bulk of my coins are not slabbed, but I think 70 some are. I am only asking about American coins. I have read here though a lot of collectors think NGC is better with ancient coins and American VAMS. Some opinions would be great.

ICG or IGS? Seriously they are very different. Like Coca Cola vs. Cocaine.

ICG - International Coin Grading is one of the top 5 services. Their slabs are distinctive because of a curved stress relief contour about 1/4 of the way down the sides.

IGS - International Grading Service is a basement slabber.

My question was about ICG and I did notice the indentations about a quarter way down on the sides of the slabs.
IGS! Wasn’t the service I was interested in but good to know they exist.

I agree. But it's all marketing, too. There's an old bromide, build a better mousetrap, and the people will beat a path to your door. Not if you don't market it, they won't. ICG grades rank with PCGS and NGC in terms of quality, they just don't spend the money marketing the brand those others do, not close.

    I did something similar.
Except on Gunbroker and not funds earmarked for Christmas.
Not a BIN but a couple bids...
I'll know more in a week if someone else wants it more than I do.

REMEMBER buy the coin not the holder.

larden, as it turns out, the coin I purchased sold for less then the same coin from the other top three graders. Knowing they are recognized in the coin community as an acceptable grade service is good enough for my small habit! lol!

Thanks Ed. The word quality is what matters. If the stuff they grade is equal to PCGS and NGC in quality then why not buy a ICG graded coin? Im sold!
