I’m confused, sorry. Is a 1983 Penny supposed to be zinc and weigh 2.5g? Or is it rare this way? And why were they made this way during this year? I don’t know anything about coins so I’m curious. I found this penny in a bag of coins in my shed. Some are cool looking and from other countries but this one really caught my eye. Please, can you explain to me a little more clearly? Thank you!

Cents were transitioned in mid 1982 from copper planchets to copper plated zinc Planchets. Copper weigh 3.11 grams and copper plated zinc 2.5 grams.. so yes, a 1983 is 2.5 grams. But all coins could have a plus or negative in weight. Many are within tolerance.
@Nolita This chart might help for future reference. @expat posted a chart back in May of 2021: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/coin-weight-tolerances.380149/
Interesting. I didn't realize that there was a bit of a weight difference for the 1943 Steel Planchet Cent late in the year.
