You heard/read wrong. The 1933's were never monetized. That's why the extra $20 had to be paid to the Treasury when the Farouk was sold in 1994. All $20's from 1932 and back were monetized. The 1933's never were.
Yup, and I hope whichever morons have them lose them in a seizure by the government. Same for 1964-D Peace dollars. "Gotta catch 'em all." It's stolen property, just like the underground stolen art world. The Langbords were no better than the Nazis who hid stolen art.
Ken come on now a few bucks? He knew from the time he got his hands on them he had something big. It be the same thing as insider trading on the stock market . A few bucks I think not! When you possess an item that was never released ,no matter if it's from a government , a rock star, a author , whom ever..... you have stolen property . When you give a cent as a gift that rightfully doesn't belong to you ....you given away stolen property ! When you have something that wasn't issued be it a coin , song lyrics , transcripts of a book, etc you're breaking the law. He knew what he had, and no one could ever convince me the family never knew..... they were between a rock and a hard place. They had two choices #1 roll the dice and act like we're playing nice, to get the coins attribution , ,or #2 Leave them in a safety deposit box for another generation. Maybe in another 100 years things could be different . No they rolled the dice and craps they lost. They weren't the thieves but had stolen property ,in the eyes of the law. They lost!
They won't. 'Cause they ain't stupid. Talk about stupid.......who goes on the CU forums and chest thumps about the case? Goobers love to pick up online dirt. A lawyer should know this.........
Shoot Paddy.......am I guilty of making a killing with the 2011 ASE sets? I saw an opportunity and took it. The abuses of the Classic Commemorative series are rife with self indigence.......do I condone it all? No. But when presented with an opportunity (which don't come 'round here very often, due to largess or failure to follow) I sometimes get lucky. Mr. Switt was much more astute than me........
Yes my point...... they knew what they were, and the value, from the old man to each and every family member. No one could ever persuade me otherwise . Like other families yeah only in low whispers that uncle Harry like to dress up in ladies clothes! But even though the wipers are low everyone knows Harry likes to play dress up! The trick is to make sure only the family knows. Family secrets aren't secret . .....
The crooks had to take a chance, or they'd be dealing in the crooked market, like my dealer, Vito "Scuza Me" Spagnolini.
I aim utterly amazed that ANYONE with half a brain could condone what McCann and Switt and Langford tried to pull off here. I guess it's that "coin nut" impulse to say "to heck with the government" - our worst collective feature by far. Makes me want to stay as far as possible from people who condone this. What other illegalities are they prone to support?
My continued employment relies on staying "purer than Caesar's wife" in my public duties. My predecessors not only lost their jobs, they served prison time.
Unless you acquired the 2011 ASE sets by stealing them or buying them "back door" from the Mint, then making a profit is a part of living in a market driven economy. Now, I think a better parallel would be the following: In 1995, the US Mint decided to include a $1 silver coin with every gold set. If someone knew about this non-public information and proceeded to purchase the vast majority of the sets, that might be considered a form of acting on insider's information.
Kurt, I admire and repect your perspective. And am in consideration of rehabilitation, but only because you hail from Pennsylvania (like me)........
