Have been struggling to attribute this coin correctly. As for now, after celebrating Thanksgiving and several glasses of wine I think it is this: Æ 16 or Hemichalkous Phoenicia, Arados, Aradian date 116 (144 – 143 BC) 16 mm, 3.84 g BMC Greek coins of Phoenicia, p. 18 (in the pdf p. 174), No.136-137; Sear Greek, 6001v; HGCS 10, No. 88; Rouvier 177 (var. different year) I think it is like this one, but I'm not sure: https://phoeniciancoins.wordpress.com/2015/03/29/ar-no-ztr-116n12-c-hb/ Ob.: Anepigraphic. Martin's site is the best. You could reach out to him on Forvm. He helped me identify this one. Arados Year 164, 96/95 BC Obvs: Female bust Astarte-Europa right, wearing stephane, and veil over back of head. Border of dots. Revs: Phoenician script "Yodh Shin Beth Daleph Mem" (yšbdm) above, Recumbent humped bull lying left. Aradian ΔΞP date in ex. AE 21x22mm, 10.37g Ref: BMC 324; Duyrat 4418/4419; HGC 10, 79 (R2)
Here's the site you want -- you'll have to navigate to the correct type. Very useful: https://phoeniciancoins.wordpress.com/arados-hellenistic-bronze-by-series-era-date/
That's were I found the coin, but I'm not sure: https://phoeniciancoins.wordpress.com/2015/03/29/ar-no-ztr-116n12-c-hb/
Not sure. There are a bunch with Nun & Ayin above on this list: https://phoeniciancoins.wordpress.com/arados-hellenistic-bronze-by-series-era-date/ There are several dates, you just gave to compare each one and see what fits best. I can't quite tell
Thank you. Left a message at https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=132779.0 don't know if Arados will read it, we'll see.
The upper legend is , the 1st letter is not an 'ayin but a C, written as a mirrored D. The date must be 116, because I count 6 strokes (a stroke = 1). The year 116 of the Aradian era is 144/3 BC. Here is a pic of a coin like yours (not mine) dated year 115 (but there could have been a 6th stroke off flan).
Thank you @GinoLR. However, when you look at the Aradian letters, the letter Daleth is like this: on my coin and also on the coin you posted you can see clearly an ' after the letter which is the letter Ayin
I didn't say it was a daleth, I just said it was written like a mirrored D. But you may be right, for several people it's an 'ayin.
