Most of us use biddr and numisbid to purchase coins from auctions. I feel comfortable making purchases from most of the dealers listed on those websites. However I came across a new dealer, Rex Numismatics, and have an uncomfortable feeling about them. Here's why: 1. No website, their website is currently "under construction" https://rexnumis.com/ 2. They have quite a few Greek, Provincial, and Roman bronzes that have obviously been painted or artificially patinaed. They do have notes indicating that some of the coins have "artificial patina" or "painted" but I'm skeptical about any of the bronzes listed in their current action as even the one's not noted have an odd sheen to them as though they have been sealed. Why would anyone ruin perfectly good coins by painting them? These are just a few links: https://www.biddr.com/auctions/rexnumis/browse?a=4035&l=4770493 https://www.biddr.com/auctions/rexnumis/browse?a=4035&l=4770541 https://www.biddr.com/auctions/rexnumis/browse?a=4035&l=4770609 https://www.biddr.com/auctions/rexnumis/browse?a=4035&l=4770647 https://www.biddr.com/auctions/rexnumis/browse?a=4035&l=4770690 The silver coins seem fine, but if the bronze coins have been altered this much it makes me feel uncomfortable about any of them. Has anybody made purchases from them or know anything about them?
These people are crooks. These coins are decorated with some kind of chemical coating. Don't buy from them.
Yes it seems really odd that most of the bronze coins have been altered. I can understand a few here-or-there but not your entire inventory. You know these coins are going to wind up in other dealers auctions in a few months. I've documented all of them so I know not to purchase them in the future should someone try cleaning them. They really ruined some rare and important coins.
I would only bid/ buy from well known dealers/ auction firms. There are great dealers on MA-shops/ auctions (sixbid)
Apparently it's a new company, based in London, auctioning thru biddr. Biddr prescreens companies before allowing them to hold auctions thru their website, but they don't review or authenticate the items they sell. If I was a dealer I wouldn't sell altered coins (tooled, artificially patinated, etc.) otherwise your just asking for trouble. What's disturbing is people are actually bidding on those altered coins; I guess they think they can just clean them.
I’ve never heard of them and I wouldn’t buy from them until they have established themselves as a reputable company.
