I vote that the 2016-W does belong, now that I have finally acquired one! I finally picked up a 2016-W Standing Liberty Quarter 100 Anniversary gold piece on a lowball(ish) auction bid! So now my top SLQ collection is 42 pieces, though a couple, like the 2016W are not considered part of an SLQ set by the numismatic authorities – so nobody call the coin police on me, please!!! I’m still working on moving some of the uncommon SLQs into straight AU / MS pieces – my 1916 (Fair 02, Details) and 1918/7-S overdate (VF Details) I don’t worry about (will likely never be able to afford those in AU or MS) but if the OT keeps up and I save my pennies, I hope to move the 1919-D (currently F12), 1919-S (VF20), 1921 (VF20, CAC Green Bean), 1923-S (VF30 Details) and 1927-S (VF20) into AU or even possibly MS coins. I’m not worried about the 1928-S varieties (FS-501 & FS-502 in VF30) and only bitterness is holding me back on the 1920-D (AU55 Details – I bought it raw and didn’t spot the cleaning, why oh why didn’t I spot the cleaning?!?!?!). I'm very proud of my SLQs - I started out with some dateless and common raw pieces, after I had a bunch I started an album, and so on, and so on, and here I am! Also note at the end the 1870 pattern Proof 64 silver quarter (Judd-918) I picked up on a (relatively) low ball bid from Heritage, those are neat, only a handful exist. So some fun remains to be had for me here. I’ve been more focused on my NGC Registry Type Set (I got sucked into this silly NGC thing, I have too many ANACS and ICG coins that I’m not likely to move to NGC to get too far I fear) and my Colonials which are coming along nicely (though I had a setback on a good fake Elephant token) – I finally got a 1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree 3 Pence (VF30 Details – plugged) and I also got lucky at Heritage Auctions on a low grade (straight G4) 1584 Raleigh Plantation Token. Here are some pics from my Lighthouse Album of the SLQ obverses. I hope everyone’s collections are doing well and wish you many happy deliveries in in the future!
Nice work! And congrats on some cool additions! I think each person can decide for themselves if the 2016 Gold belongs in a set with the silver counterparts. Personally, I would say it does not belong in the set. However, I would likely want one if I were collecting SLQs. Maybe the compromise would be that it's a set of related items.
Whether or not it belongs is up to you in my opinion, you are the authority of your collection. This collection looks great, I really like the SLQ.
You have a very nice set. It would be up to you to answer your own question. To me, the answer is no but it’s not my set.
I'll never ever forgive them for making the 2016-W the size of a nickel. They should have sucked it up and struck it as a 3/8-oz coin, along with a 3/4-oz Walker and a 0.15-oz Merc. (The 2014 gold Kennedy, at 3/4 oz, is the same size as the standard coin.)
Really nice Sir. I got one from the mint and had it graded. Came back as a SP70. I keep it with my three SLQs in the type set as well. Your set is great!
Yeah, that SLQ classic design does translate quite nicely in gold. I much enjoy mine but have to agree with @-jeffB that it should have been quarter size.
I don't have one (2016 Gold) amd didn't realize it was smaller in size, but I did always think it needed or should have been made with more gold. Now I know why. The mint sometimes really does some weird things,
Now that you crossed over the line into bullion, there is that no date 1/4 ounce SLQ silver round that people confuse with real ones.
I bought the gold SLQ because I liked it, not because it fit in some set. I got the gold dime and gold Half Dollar as well. I'm try to find a way to have all of them in a special set. Best of luck on your collection.
If they are graded or all graded the same, there is a wooden box that holds 3 slabs. Other than that I don't know how you would want to display/store them. I'm still looking for the SP70 Walking half. I didn't want to pay the $900/$1000 selling prices back then and now that ship looks to have sailed
