1983 D US mint copper plating error

Some people believe this coin was altered after it came from the US mint. I found this is circulation and in my opinion the copper plating was not annealed properly and pulled off in the printing process. I inspected the coin with a digital microscope and there are no tool marks the edges around the missing coper plating. No scratches and the copper plating edges stand perfectly erect. Had the been ground or filed it would be impossible for someone to create this coin without leaving tool marks. NGC graded the coin (AU bent) but made no remarks about the missing copper on some of the coin surface.

What you have there is a coin that was lost in a washing machine caught between the fixed and spinning drum. The copperplate is worn away leaving that appearance. I've made many such specimens doing the laundry.

 

That is damaged, no doubt about it. Notice how it is on the highest points of the design? That's because whatever rubbed through the plating only hit the high points.

 

It’s definitely damaged. Probably by a clothes dryer.

 

The unplated Lincolns were struck without the plating.

No one said the coin was altered. We said it was damaged and NGC agrees.

 

I also do nickels, dimes, and quarters.

 

I don't see where anyone here said "altered". Just because NGC says "bent" does not mean it doesn't have other damage. If a coin has multiple issues they don't list all of them, just what they feel are the most significant. What is pictured is damage with 100% certainty.

 

I called NGC and spoke with customer service representative about the definition of the (AU bent) grade. They said it does not mean the coin is damaged or altered. AU means (almost uncirculated.) Bend is not a description they use to say the coin was damaged, it means bent. That was the customer services response. I really can't see what you are getting at here. No one here said it was altered, it is damaged. Bent is damaged, the surface scratched off is damaged. There is no way for this to have happened during the minting process. If a coin has multiple types of damage, they don't always list all of them, just what they feel is the most significant. Send it off to PCGS, they may identify all the different types of damage it has sustained.

 

I don't believe that NGC said that bent was not damage. You did not understand what they told you.

 

NGC may have put BENT on the label but bent is damaged. Bent is bent but not damaged? You totally misunderstood what they are saying.
