1944 p cent with odd 4's

    It's interesting that the 4's have two colors. The most obvious being in the doubling below the horizontal bar in the two 4's. It's likely nothing, but it's the first time I've seen it. I'd be grateful for an explanation of it. Thanks

    Simple. It's a worn die issue.
    Die Deterioration.

    The clues are in the rest of the die characteristics.

    1944 was during WWII and the mint pushed the dies to the point of total wear out. This is one of the things that occurred during this time. Remember that steel cents were used in place of copper the year before. WWII crested a number of problems with our economy and our coinage.

    Come on.. you know from past threads pennywise never posts full pictures of any of his coins. He never sees nor understands the need to do so :bucktooth:

    Well, it's not our fault. LOL
    44's can be a real challenge. If a person looked at the DDO's for the year, they look quite a bit like the one pictured. With out the rest of the details, it is only his loss.

    I see corrosion as well which can create a host of colors on a specimen.
