PASS. Tough love Dept: If you have to ask, you should not buy ANY raw coins over $100. The VG grade on the 2x2 looks low. The price on the 2x2 is double for that grade. The reverse is nice. What's wrong with the obverse?
I don't know why it takes on an orange hue in those pics. Here's one where it doesn't, pic was too large to let me upload on cointalk. https://imgur.com/a/iOWcuOS
@Insider I think that’s a grade of VF but it does look like a VG. Even in VF, I’d pass. That dark ring in the stars with a light field makes me think PASS. If it’s worth that much money it should be graded by a TPG.
Those halos around the stars seem to be somewhat common on these (details ones), albeit not usually this severe
My thoughts exactly. The coin is at least a Fine. The reverse is yummy but the charcoal around the obverse kills it for me.
Well…. The TPG industry has been at this long enough that any piece valued at more than 1k that is not in a slab is immediately suspect to me.
I think you should pay attention to what the members posted here. If for no other reason to much money for a raw coin.
Stuff like this, way out of my element, is always suspect without the 'holder'. Like most above, I would pass , if for no other reason than to err on the side of caution....
I'll indeed pass (always did think the price was high) But the Draped bust dollar is not a coin I would want slabbed. If it was something like a 1893-S Morgan, sure, but this is a coin best appreciated raw, especially with the edge lettering. I suppose you could crack a slab but that's never fun.
You didn't miss it. He's a good trusted local dealer for several decades now. Awhile back a fake St. Gaudens (not an omega) got past him and he refunded the person. Usually good prices but there's some flyballs like this one.
as others have pointed out, vf details but obverse has been cleaned. It would have to be priced a lot lower to get any interest from me. For example, when I checked, CDN Retail for a problem free VF20 is $2500.
