Grade opinions on 1893 Morgandollar?

Hello,

Does anyone have any idea of the grade of this 1893 Morgandollar? I'm not experienced enough to make a qualified guess, but leaning towards a XF...or...?

Luster is very difficult to discern from photographs. That said, the grade of this coin will largely depend on the amount of luster present, and so an in-hand examination is best.

Beware any opinions given based on the images alone.

 

It's worn and beat up by bag marks. I doubt it would grade higher than F-40.

 

Ugh, those date numerals! They match the certified examples I've just checked with Google Images, but the engraver must have had a great time the night before he did this date.

 

Lots of luster, not much wear but baggy = AU-50

Date looks funny due to angle of photo.

Lets play coin grading seminar AND I"M NOT TALKING DOWN TO YOU or any others here. Consider this just an opinion.

This is what I've learned & how I learned it.

1. Look at the coin. Describe the amount of original mint luster you see in words. That should get you into the "ballpark" as far as a grade. We cannot tip and rotate the coin so from the photos I'll say very much. A coin with very much luster STARTS at XF. Modern commercial grading will call a coin with just a little luster XF! This is nuts to us old timers but that is the way it is.
Therefore, IMHO, anyone who grades this coin VF is not qualified to take Grading 102. Students who say XF are just conservative. So IMO, XF-45 to AU-50.

NOTE: Since you can see the tiny amount of luster in the eye, how do you miss the MASSIVE amount behind the motto? I'm confused.

2. Let's look at the details present. One place I'll look is the leaf detail below the eagle. It's all there with luster too. One thing that may be causing a low ball opinion is the fact that this coin is weakly struck - borderline flat strike.

3. The marks kill it. Therefore My AU-50. Otherwise the wear grade is XF-45 for the conservative folks but that's used for "Choice surfaces." This coin is not "choice" it is XF typical = XF-40.

I'm AU-50. The XF guys will get no argument. The VF guys are way too low (remember, JMO).

XF40 to me.

Edit: Going off luster I could accept 45. Taken as a whole I still say 40. And possibly dipped/cleaned. Can't really tell from the pics.

The "MASSIVE" amount of luster, as you put it, behind the motto is irrelevant. You should know that very little (positive) weight is given to the reverse. I don't care about Grading 101, 102 or 999. I'll stick with my original estimate.

Looks cleaned and or dipped to me.

 

The massive amount of luster is all over the entire coin...I just picked the easiest place to see it for a beginner.

It's bought raw and from a collector who said he got it years ago from a commercial dealer...so assuming it's real and not fake..
