Sadly, this desirable, counterstamped half dollar was toasted in a fire; hence, the dark silver. Parisian Varieties was a girlie show in NY City between 1875-76, so this coin was likely near mint state when stamped. The specialty dance was the can-can. For $3, a princely sum back then, a customer could sit onstage. This show was something of a precursor to the famed Radio City Rockettes. A few dozen of these stamped coins likely exist.
Cascade: Did you know my grandfather?? Everyone received a bolo tie or necklace made from Morgan's from my grandfather. God bless him, but he ruined a lot of coins.
Here is my contribution of a pretty dark tones silver - a Half Bust 1835, supposedly a S-109 and R-2 die marriage. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
As a F-XF collector, I've owned my fair share of dark silver coins. But this one, that I no longer own, was my darkest one.
