Hi all, I purchased this lot of coins today. The coin in question to me is the flying eagle cent. I believe it’s real. I am just concerned because if you zoom in on the reverse you can see that the denticles and rim is a little harsh or badly struck. Can you guys give me details on what you think? Is it real? Will it strait grade? Is it part of the strike or damage? thanks Larry
The FE rev does seem to have been struck slightly off center. My biggest draw was to the dime and libertys face.. it seems to be missing.
I'm having trouble with the lettering on America on your FEC. The 1858 has two common varieties, either the small letters or the large letters. The spacing between the A and M on yours doesn't really fit into either variety. The large letters have the A and M almost touching. The small letter variety they're spaced what appears to be farther apart than yours. For that reason I'd have to pass on it, based on the pictures. The rim damage on the reverse just adds insult to injury. If the damage was due to a jewelry bezel I would expect to see more clothing rub/wear on either the obverse or reverse. And that doesn't jump out at me.
I looked at this thread earlier today. Didn’t have time to evaluate. Obviously this is a strange grouping. And after reading the above responses, I’d be trying to return those. Just sayin
Oh man say it ain’t so. Can an expert please weigh in and let me know if this is error, damage or fake? Sometimes it’s hard to see in the coin shop on the spot.
After looking and matching the details the FEC matches the small letters exactly. Would be a damn good fake if it is fake. The rim does concern me. But some have told me that they have seen similar rims on other authentic coins. The seated dime is more of a concern to me. But I have seen other lamination errors and light strikes on similar coins with the same affect. The reverse rim on the dime is also not really attractive and it concerns me. I already purchased the coins and must be completely sure on the authenticity if I’m going to jeopardize the relationship with the coin shop owner.
Send them to NGC or PCGS. If they come back fake I doubt your dealer will question it. It will gnaw at you forever. You'll never be happy with those coins until know for sure they're real.
I truly hope that the FEC is real. I myself collect IHP and of course FEC to go with it, and that is one beautiful cent if it is real. Please update us if you do send it in!
