I found this 1989D cent and I see what I think is zinc exposed over some of the letters in USofAmerica and in the D mm. It appears above the T, E, and D in United, the S, T, and E in in States, the E, C, and A of America. Also on the right side column of L M. My photos aren’t to clear but they should be ok to see what’s happening. Tks Image_2023-10-07 19_08_50_141.jpeg

WOW. Lots of letters and it can only be one thing. Something called "split plate doubling". Search Results for “split plate doubling” (error-ref.com)

Another hint Dan. See that ridge ring around the perimeter of the cent? That look only exist on a heavily deteriorated die.

Yep, the ridge around the cent looks strange. I’ll have to do some reading. Tks

SensibleSal added a link for split plate doubling at error-ref above. I’m going to do some reading and get a handle on this.
I think the example for split plating shows a good example of the error on my cent. Interesting reading.

Minted by a very worn die. It’s a zinc cent so that’s your first clue. The zinc showing above the word UNITED is clearly split plate doubling. There’s no extra value for i as it’s very common.

I’ve been collecting coins and notes since I was 5. I’m now 69 and still learning.

Haha, my wife wishes I would forget but I tend to remember 95% of things that enter my brain. We disagree on something and later she finds out I was correct. It drives her crazy. Lol
