Thanks for correcting my post - of course, ONLY a stereo microscope. I got lazy. But, the member you ignore can see your posts right? I swore I would never ignore anyone but came close the other day. I thought if he posted one more stupid thing I would ignore him. Bam! he got banned and the thread was closed.
I ignored him. The effect was immediate, immediately de-stressed. Left it a day and then reinstated him, by that time the thread was closed and all was right with the world.
I was simply trying to be polite. No need for sympathy from the likes of rude and unwelcoming individual such as yourself. You obviously are not capable of reading the posts in their entirety where I mentioned and apologized for being an inexperienced numismatist of the ancients, as well as, the fact that I'm not even American. So no need to threaten me with old school nuns, as you have no idea what kind of life experience I have besides numismatics. I am very happy for you for the fact that you are diligently standing digital guard on behalf of all of NGC and that you proudly mention it in every other post. Keep it up!
In my post above I mentioned the availability of stereo microscopes on eBay. It has been several years since I bought mine and there are now many different ones (mine NOT included) offered. I have no way of knowing which are better and which are not and I am in no way encouraging anyone to buy the one linked here as opposed to any other. http://www.ebay.com/itm/AmScope-SE3...467761?hash=item5d3b4701b1:g:2dEAAOSwbdpWYkje The reason I'm showing this is one of the several views they show as part of the listing struck me as very interesting: The coin is a late and harsh portrait of Julia Domna under her son Caracalla. Are we to believe that someone selling microscopes on eBay collects ancient coins or knows Julia Domna? NOOOOOO!!! Look closer. It is not a picture taken through their scope but it is my coin above. Compare the shapes of the rough patches near Julia's nose. Did they just use an old photo of my coin or did they steal my photo? I have owned the coin since 1988 and first posted a photo of it online in 1997. You decide. I really was hoping the seller was a collector but no, just a merchant who knows good photography when they see it.
Wow! Before I read your final paragraph I thought you'd pulled a Photoshop joke on us. Yep, that is definitely your coin. I can't quite tell what they have under the microscope but it looks more like a US cent If I were you I'd be equal parts flattered and mad that they used/stole my image!
I would send a polite message to the seller asking if he was going pay you royalties for using one of your photographs, just for the hell of it
For $169 that's a good scope for most. The 5X and 10X powers will get the most use. IMO, any collector who spends over 5K a year who wants a scope should spring for a NIKON SMZ-2 Zoom w/10X eye pieces. Then get 15X too. That gives a range of 7X -60X. A .5X auxiliary lens will lower the power to less than 4X. I've learned that most ancient authentication is done at 10X to 15X. The lower powers let you see more of the coin.
