If you're able to, take these coins to a large show where the grading services are offering opinions about the coins and others can help you evaluate the coins. The 1853 $1 looks cleaned as does the $2 1/2 Indian. The 1911 $10 is probably AU. The 96-S $20 looks nice except for that line between stars 1 and 2 (clockwise from lower left), which looks like a scratch, which will result in a "details grade." If you don't have a PCGS membership, it might be best to submit to them through someone who does. If you want them in TPG holders, the best course of action would probably be to submit to ANACS, as your costs will be lowest this way.

 

I’d look into that thing, it almost looks too perfect for a scratch...

 

The 08' I thinks looks good for contact, I am just a little leary on saying MS. Can you do some full size pics on MS Liberty?

 

All very nice, but the 1883-S takes the prize to me.

Personally for any gold coins 1933 or earlier I would use PCGS. Rest probab;y NGC or ANACS. I have to say all the ANACS coins I have I am very happy with.

 

Well now what? Went to the PCGS web site to download some forms and couldn’t. It says at the bottom of the form No longer valid after June 2023 or something like that? So do you need a membership for grading or is there a.way to download the up to date form? Tks

 

Yes you need a membership. But the form on the website should be the current ones with the updated rates.

good advice! The 1853 wasn’t making the grading trip! Not much value and the 1911 was a maybe. The 96s has a scratch that will result in details grade? Not sure what that means? I’m looking at the gold members for the 4 membership vouches. I’m not sure what grade my coins will be graded, but it will be a learning experience and interesting.

I honestly don't know. But if they do details it anybody with eyesight can see the strength of that coin, and that it has superb eye-movement through it, which is the chief determinant in how one feels about it. We don't think about that, but it is. And that scratch or whatever it is doesn't bother or disturb the eye-movement, for the most part it's inconsequential.

 

A details grade would be assigned for issues like scratched or cleaning.... "AU Details, Cleaned" instead of one of the 4 AU grades (AU50, AU53, AU55, or AU58).

A die crack is an artifact of the minting process (the die cracked, every coin struck from that die will show the same crack - until it progresses or the die is removed from service). Generally, these aren't called out on the label until they get to a spectacular level...

The scratches are why it got a details grade (ANACS gives the numeric + details, PCGS would just call it AU Details).

The shattered die is recognized as a retained cud. The die shattered but a piece at the rim was retained and struck this coin. Po-ta-to Pa-ta-to.

eddie, I’m going to contact PCGS shortly and get the process started. Sun has to come up on the west coast first. My hope is they all come back graded without issues. Cleaned, fakes, scratched or graded low or high. Whatever they grade they get will be what they are.

 

They’re grading for their market, remember, and at times they can be particular. Meaning, well, we’ll see. Good luck.

 

eddie I purchased a membership with 8 vouchers. So I started a submission for my coins and was not happy with the outcome. First off, my coins can only be valued at $2500 each and then it says non gold coins only? So it looks like they won’t allow gold coins to be graded with a voucher. Does this sound right?
Then I tried calling them and they said Opened m/fri and to call back tomorrow. All lines were full? Sounds like the checks in the mail business!
