My most recent pick up. I've tried to find time earlier in the week to post but had a busy schedule. For some reason I have a fascination with Pax and have set out to collect ancients which portrait her. Maybe it has to do with my own search to find peace in this life. I think the hardest part will be finding coins with a clean strike. I'm sure you all know most coins that portrait Pax are usually weak and messy. This buy made possible from YOC thru JA. I appreciate both of you for the opportunity. Making my second coin from the "Mossy Bottom Barn Hoard". I love the strike on both sides. The reverse with Pax is difficult to find such a clean strike that this coin has. Victorinvs 269-271 AD AE Antoninanus, 19mm 2.5g, 12H Cologne mint Obv. IMP C VICTORINVS P F AVG. Radiate, draped bust right. Rev. PAX AVG; Pax standing left holding branch and scepter/ V-Star Ref. RICV (B) 116, p. 397 Mossy Bottom Barn Hoard
Nice addition, mine is Pax too. Victorinus (268 - 271 A.D.) Æ(S) Antoninianus O: IMP C VICTORINVS P F AVG, radiate draped and cuirassed bust right. R: PAX AVG, Pax standing left holding scepter and branch, V in left field, * in right field. Treveri (Trier). Struck 269 - 270 A.D. 3.1g 20mm RIC V 117; AGK 14a; Cohen 83
Not all. Here is one that is not messy at all. CARACALLA AR Denarius OBVERSE: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT, laureate head right REVERSE: P M TR P XIIII COS III P P, Pax running left holding branch & scepter Struck at Rome, 211 AD 3.11g, 18mm RIC 184, RSC 190, BMC 4
These are the only PAX I have... Looks like over a 30 year period, these guys were all striving for PEACE! RI Victorinus 269-270 CE BI Ant Gallic Empire PAX RI Carausius 287-293 AE22 London mint PAX RI Allectus 293-296 CE AE Ant PAX
I definitely like yours to Bing. I did say most & usually. You have a nice Caracalla would love to find one as nice. Auto spell correct was not correct lol
Yeah I had to outbid someone for it. At the same time I was looking at another nowhere near as nice almost bought it but saw this one. Paid about $20 more but worth it.
Most reverses on Gallic coins are weak - it's just the nature of the beast. Bing posted a late Severan Dynasty denarius, which are typically of very high artistry and craftsmanship. It's really comparing apples and oranges. But the the OP coin has one of the nicest reverse strikes of ANY Gallic type that I've come across. And as you can see, the artistry is quite good - they were just generally lazy when it came to actually striking the dies. Minor correction smojo: it's VICTORINVS, not VICTORIOUS.
Recent Gordian III sestertius I bought because of the Pax reverse: Ric 319 with Pax advancing right holding olive branch and scepter. This thing is pretty big too at 28.5mm and 23 grams.
I have turned auto correct off everything. Hate it. Druther you see my mistake, than REALLY scrow-up!
Yeah seems I can be quite illiterate sometimes on my own without the help of some gadget that thinks it knows what I'm trying to say.
Cha-ching, Smojo => nice OP-score!! I only have this one humble example ... Vic => my example features the sweet Sol man!!
Very cool posts!!! My example is typical of the type as well. And another that shows a bit of a double-strike with Providentia:
Beautifull coins, thanks for showing them! I do not have any Gallic coins......YET. Hope to score one in 2016!
that's a sweet pax for these coins smojo! here's my gallic pax....less sweet. Tetricus I Æ Antoninianus, 271-274AD Antoninianus O: Radiate bust of Tetricus right "IMP C TETRICVS AVG" R: Pax standing left holding a branch and staff, "PAX AVG". Cologne mint. 20 mm, 3.9 g Sear III - 11243, RIC 100
I would like to offer an observation on the OP coin. The obverse legend and attribution are incorrect. The obverse legend reads IMP PIAV VICTORINVS P F AVG, where PIAV is short for PIAVVONIVS. RIC V-II, 117, Cologne, AGK 14a; Cohen 83 Here is my PIAV variety with a Fides reverse. Victorinus - Antoninianus Obv:– IMP C PIAV VICTORINVS P F AVG, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev:– FIDES MILITVM, Fides standing left holding two standards Minted in Treveri mint. Reference:– AGK 5b; RIC 109 Martin
It may be that I just woke up & brain is still asleep but. There is no PIAV in the OP attribution. I did go back to double check where I got the info from vs what I put in. It seems to be correct. So may want to double check your info.
