It looks too good at first glance... and then CC mint mark gives it away. I am returning it I think, but thought I would show it incase I was wrong.

The Carson City Mint produced its first coins in 1870. You can draw your conclusions from there.

As a new collector, you don’t buy coins like this raw. I’ve been at this for 60 years +. I would not buy them unless I can see them in person.

Look before you leap. Also, do your homework ahead of time......Read, read in depth before you even consider purchasing a particular coin, or starting a certain series. The internet is (most times) a valuable friend, and you have many within these forums. :)

The number of coin thievery such as fake dates, fake coin metals content, faked metalwork on coins, fake coloration of coin surfaces( BIGXXX!!!) than number of active collectors is close to equal...IMO. Jim

Research first, buy later. I guess they could claim it was a moonlight mint fantasy coin.

You could accurately call it “a Chinese mule.” A mule is a piece that is made from two dies that don’t normally belong together. This thing was made from a counterfeit 1844 dollar die and counterfeit die that made to make counterfeit dollars dated from 1866 to 1873.

Chargeback, SNAD, return. The seller sent you a fake coin, so they shouldn't be trusted to refund your money. This is why the chargeback first.

Out of curiosity, did you buy it online, or from a dealer/vendor/local ad?

I bought it off ebay, so I am hoping that the USPS will deliver it and then automatically ebay will process the return.

eBay will 100% have your back if you report it as Not As Described and state that it's a counterfeit coin. In the past, they sometimes didn't even require that you send it back to the seller (who might well try to pass it off to someone else), but it was inconsistent.

eBay policy forbids any listings of counterfeit coins, even if they're marked COPY (which makes them legal to buy and sell outside eBay). As you see, though, they don't enforce this very thoroughly.

Yes. File a SNAD and notify eBay that the seller illegally listed and sold a counterfeit coin before returning it. The seller probably won't care if you don't return it, because they have plenty more where that came from.

Post the seller so we can see what else they're doing.

Total fake. Carson city only made seated dollars 3 years. 1870-73. All are scarce. The 73-cC damn rare. Then they made trade dollars from 1873-78. All are scarce. And very heavily faked. Never buy a trade dollar uncertified unless from a knowledgeable reputable dealer. Not off eBay.

    Welcome to the forum!

There are several folks here pretty attune to current counterfeits...

1st, in a word the images pretty much suck:D; but, my 1st step in evaluating any coin is ATTRIBUTION- as I say in many of my articles on the subject, if you can't attribute the variety than "Huston, we have a problem".

1st, using the PCGS guide, you would notice the years for Seated $'s with a motto- starting with 1866; your 1844 has a motto, so strike 1!

    Types- PCGS.jpg

    1844-CC$.jpg

Then, as others and you noted, you don't see any CC's in the group of no motto pieces like your 1844 dated example; strike 2:

    No CC's.jpg
And I am documenting current counterfeits to write attribution articles; your reverse appears similar to other different dated CC seated counterfeit $'s like this 1872:

    1872-cc rev.jpg

I do hope you can get your money back; I actually spend some time each day reporting bad listings but there is only so much time...

    Best, Jack.
